Okay, I just purchased a Vodem and went to connect it to my Mac only to find that I was mis-informed by Vodafone as to its ability to work on an Intel Mac. I've just looked at the site and it seems I may have missed this as well. Apparently the version supplied is not actually capable of running on Intel Macs. I have a workaround but it's nasty... as in I have to install Windows nasty.

I have a theory on how to get it to work but I need someone who has a Vodem running on a PPC Mac.

Does anyone have this setup and if so does it install a Modem Script?

Edit: Apparently this program is unstable and you only get 1.8Mbs

One last Edit: Why is it that people insist on spelling it "MAC". I mean, do you think it's an acronym or something? It's short for Macintosh, not My Apple Computer or something.

There's new firmware coming out for the Vodem in roughly two weeks' time that'll make it work with Intel based Macs, I hear.

This is a show stopper for me and it's unfortunate as most of vf's advertising shows vodem being used with Intel MacBook Pros.

Hopefully new firmware/drivers are out sooner rather than later. lowededwookie keep an eye on this page:

I tried that Launch2Net software and while it did work the Shareware limitations make this product nigh on useless and I personally feel $90(US) is a ripoff for this software considering it won't allow you full speed.

I'm going to continue using my V800 until the software is available but I guess I have to keep swapping out my SIM card unless the dataplan is valid across all devices under my account. Need to contact Vodafone for that.

I am surprised though that the VMC software won't run under Rosetta at least. It's not like it's doing something different on PPC Mac that isn't supported on Intel machines. I mean it's only querying a USB port and running a Network Connect connection which is handled by the OS. It should in theory work across the board.

I've got a G4 Powermac here, haven't upgraded to one of the new Intel macs yet.

However I'm getting a Vodem shortly... and will be posting to see how easy it is to set up.

Should be dead easy to setup.

Ironically it's even easier to setup on Windows which is a rare event indeed.

Also Mike is correct, the Vodafone ad shows it plugged into the FireWire port.

That lead going to the Vodem is also a standard PHONE lead not a USB or even a FireWire lead.

I'm not surprised by the inconsistencies however. The Media has always done this. I've seen many a Mac icon or logo on software that isn't even available for the Mac. The media just tends to play off what is cool to make their products look cool despite the accuracy of the marketing.

How do you figure that? With Windows you just plug in it and it goes, with Mac you have to insert a CD and install from that first.

That's what I said. It's easier to setup on Windows than on the Mac.

Normally setting up anything like this on Windows is a prick e.g. setting up a phone using Bluetooth, but in this case it is really so very simple. EVERY hardware manufacturer should take note of what Vodafone has done.

Lowededwookie takes 10 damage for inaccurate generalisation and for lumping ad agencies with "The Media".

Actually it's not really a gross generalisation. Advertisements are a form of media. With Ad agencies because of the nature of what they do they may get it wrong but it's the traditional media (newspapers, TV, now the Internet) that print it despite inaccurate portrayals.

Also what about the likes of newspapers, programs like Campbell Live, 20/20, 60 Minutes, etc that are full of inaccuracies or half truths when reporting on technology let alone normal stories? These are exactly like advertisements because they are trying to sell their views. Look at how many subjects on these seem so very onesided.

For the sake of the almighty dollar the media (in all its forms - including advertising) forgoe facts to promote their side of the story, as we have seen here in this simple looking ad.

Despite the obvious flaws in what is shown, there is a slight problem with making claims against this. Because, it is plausible that this Mac is running Windows in which case this technically means the Vodem is supported on Intel Macs, just not on MacOS X.
