Hi all,

I have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 Router behind a generic ADSL2+ Modem. I thought I'd try using a tunnel to access IPv6 websites, so I tried to set up a SixXS tunnel.

While doing that I tried the Auto Detect and 6to4 Tunnel Auto Config functions in the router, which gave me a WxC IPv6 address. I know it's a WxC address because ipv6-test.com told me where it originated from.

A couple of questions, firstly, is this supposed to be possible? Secondly, is it possible to access my router from the Public IPv6 Internet using this IPv6 address?

If anyone could help that would be great. I've also asked the XNet helpdesk about IPv6, and they said they would 'email the engineers' and get back to me.

Thanks in advance,

Matthew McTague

Hi Matthew,

We don't offer 6to4 or other tunnelled services, we offer only native dual-stacked ipv6... Would be interested to know what address you are getting assigned, as you should only get a v6 prefix if your account has it enabled.

Cheers,

Callum

XNet offers full (native) dual stack now. I thought you had to specifically ask to get onto the trial though?

You do need to ask to be put on the trial at this stage, it is not on by default.  Yet.

Callum,

I'm being assigned 2002:3a1c:9854::1/16.

Really didn't expect it to work, just tried Auto Detect to see what would happen.

I would be interested in being part of the trial, I realize that it's closed now though.

Feel free to give me a call, guessing you can get the number from my WxC account.

Cheers,

Ah... the 2002::/16 prefix is used in the 6to4 transition mechanism, see here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6to4

Note that we don't assign you a 6to4 prefix, it is auto generated based upon you IPv4 address, and you route all 6to4 traffic to a relay which uses the anycast address 192.88.99.1 - I'm pretty sure the one you would be using is hanging off the APE and is hosted by FX Networks.

Ok, that makes sense now then.

Is there any possibility of getting native IPv6 from WxC, or will it be offered in the near future?

If your router supports it (It will need to support DHCPv6) then send me a PM with your username and I will turn it on for you.
