Hello everyone,

I am about to move into a new rental, however it doesnt have cellphone (Vodafone) coverage, nor will the landlord get a phone line run to the house (says it will cost $1000).

However I desperately need Internet as I am in the closing stages of my PhD. Ive rung Vodafone and Woosh with no success.

After doing some internet research ive found that Farmside and Wireless Nation can provide me with a satellite and therefore internet connection. Its quite pricey however ($200-300 to install, $75/month for 3gb).

Does anyone know of any alternatives?

Has anyone used either Farmside or Wireless Connection?

I enquired to Lightwire but they dont do coverage in raglan.

My new address will be 10a Calvert Rd, Raglan.

Another thing to consider too, will the landlord let you install a dish ?

Do any of the neighbours have internet, if so, share the costs with them and setup a wifi connection ?

Consider a different rental? Farmside is horrendously expensive c/w ADSL, for example. And long term contracts usually apply too.

Cheers guys, yea if all else fails, il approach my neighbour and see if he is keen to go halves. Hopefully the wifi will reach my place as well.

Yea Farmside seems rather expensive alright, and slow. Is that coz its ADSL? something like 2-3Mbps.

Seems like Farmside or neighbour are my only options.

Are you sure that there is no phone line to the property?
The sub division does not look that new, surely prevouse ocupiers had a phone. I gues it might have been a batch and never had the phone connected.

That is very rural but is in the Vodafone RBI in the future

also have you tried telecom sim to see if that have 3g?

No, it's because it's satellite. Satellite bandwidth (and gear) is not cheap.

Seriously consider getting another place to rent?

If internet access is important then consider this as a requirement before you rent a place.

Hi, yea it was a summer bach so they never put a phone line in. Landlord saying theyll need to get a trench dug to the house etc etc.

No I havent tried the Telecom 3g. When I looked on their website, my address was out of the zone. Il try ring them tomo to confirm.

You're not too far off from picking up Telecom's mobile network - might be worth looking into a rooftop antenna to go through that?

Might be a bit quicker than going through Satellite (plus also cheaper too)

Ah yes, i tried looking on their website for something like that rooftop antenna, as Vodafone has a similar thing in the "Sure Signal". But couldnt find it on the telecom website. Therefore do you mean rooftop antenna that I could purchase from a retailer (i.e. Dick Smith)? or do Telecom have them?

Looks like Telecom and Vodafone Cell sites are on the same hill, so you might not do any better,

According to the bible of all things, ( the Chorus Map) there is ADSL in the area, so find a friendly neighbour who has the internet and see if you can go halves with them

Then get someone to get you a point to point wifi set up, to get it to the bach you are in.
(there are plenty of peps here that can tell you what gear you will need, and where to get it)

how long you gonna stay there?
If for a while offer to go halves on the install of a phone line. Will work out cheaper in the long run than using farmside.
