Hey guys just looking for a bit of help if possible. Am trying to get a list together of all wifi hotpsot providers in NZ for an online directory I am creating at http://www.auswireless.net I already have most of Telecom's listings and am working on the cafenet ones (bit slow since their website isn't very descriptive on exact locations) but are there any other providers I should be looking at?

Hi Diesel.    Good idea!    There is http://www.Zenbu.net.nz from which you can easily get the list, including a map and search facility combined with "nearest" function.   You might like to put prices per megabyte and per hour/day/week in your listing too as some, such as Telecom, are hideously expensive at $10 an hour [depending on who you are] while some are sensibly and cheaply priced as low as 10c a megabyte without a time limit [such as Zenbu - the best system of course].

There are Surfspot, Tomizone, Global Gossip, Fivo and others I can't think of right now.   You've got CafeNet. Costs to the proprietor who owns the location vary a GREAT deal.    Some charge them big voucher printing fees.   Some tie them up in contracts for years.

A list without the price is less useful.   $10 an hour isn't very attractive to normal humans.   10c a megabyte with no time limits is great for checking email a few times a day [with 5 megabytes thrown in for free at the start].    Telecom's and time-based systems are good for downloading movies [assuming the backhaul line is running quickly]

There's also Kordia [which has Parnell ready to go and they plan to build out metropolitan areas using RoamAD technology]. https://www.kordiametrowifi.com/coverage.php Parnell is covered now with another system which will be replaced with the Kordia one.

There are some listings on the wikitravel.org New Zealand page as well. Also, the Telecom sites have a prepaid service as well, something your listings do not say. http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,8748,204163-1036,00.html?nv=tpd

Thanks for info guys. Yeah looking at adding in costs for each provider in the near future. At the moment I just want to get a list of providers so you can at least know where you can get wifi access.

Some idiot removed the wikitravel material which was:

Auckland: The Parnell shopping district, with quite good signal and speed. Newmarket (to be confirmed)
Christchurch: Riccarton Mall Hoyts Cinema/Cafe (customers only), no power points. Christchurch Central Library (generally limited to web browsing), power points available.

[Edit] these are free locations

Hey guys had a bit of spare time so have added in some costing to the records. It currently only works for Azure provided hotspots so if you check out this link can you tell me what you think. It still needs some work but is that the kind of information your look to see?

That's good Diesel. You can also add mapping to show locations like this http://www.remuerashopping.co.nz/ See the little Zenbu symbol in "Map". If you click on that, you will get a Zenbu map and you can put the hotspots in Zenbu so people would have an easy way of finding them, including a satellite photo and also a "find nearest" function so they could find the nearest hotspots to a particular location.

It's all free. Try out http://www.Zenbu.co.nz and you can put that into your web site.

Sorry mate I'll tame it down a little.

I do have a map link for each location that is linked into google maps. It gets the location right most of the time. I have looked at displaying a small map image on the site but thought it might clutter it up too much so have just provided the link instead.

Mauricio, I have looked back up this forum and see three posts by me, which answered the questions asked by somebody who is doing a very useful thing in making a website of all public Wi-Fi sites in New Zealand, with pricing and maps. Zenbu Networks [Wi-Fi provider] is mentioned in one, with a link. Zenbu.co.nz is not my business and I have no financial interest in it. It is run and owned by Sam Giffney http://www.companies.govt.nz/cms/banner_template/CNAME who has no financial interest in the Wi-Fi business. They are separate companies. They are working together and share the name because they are useful to each other. I think they shouldn't share a name as it will just confuse people, but they want to do that.

I have deleted my "signature" line. Maybe that was too much writing and now you won't see so many references to what was upsetting you.

Note that I obligingly provided the Wi-Fi competitors' names too so he could make a complete list, complete with mapping to find them.

just found another, The Nurv in Mangawhai Heads, about 1 and a half hours north of auckland. a DVD and Internet shop has Prepay and Credit wireless available, great too. fast and from as little as 15 minutes. 24 hours too. hope that helps
