Hi, we are moving to a farm which currently has farmside (4gb) Our teenage kids would use this in a day! so looking at better options - unlimited data or at least 40gb - not too pricey. We are in the Taumarunui region. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your not going to get Huge amounts of data over satellite, certainly not for cheap.

Toss the address into there and see what you get, Might be able to look at RBI, If you can ild recommend talking to these guys, http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html Rather than direct with vodafone as the pricing will be a tad more favourable...

If you want satellite then Farmside is your best option.

If you want RBI wireless then there are a number of resellers of the service. Ultimate Broadband (as listed above) have some good plans.

Whatever you go with you have4 to accept that living rurally and relying on delivery over wireless or satellite that unlimited is quite simply not a realistic option and will never occur for a multitude of reasons.

I haven't been on satellite for some time, but I found Wireless Nation to be superior in every way to Farmside except Farmside had off peak (midnight to 6am) quota as well as paid for daytime quota.

See if http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html can cover you as it'll offer far better speeds and data for potentially less money.

if they will use 4gb in a day then 40gb will be gone in 10, your going to need at least 150 to satisfy your usage needs.

but if you end up being satellite only you will need to change your usage habits, unless you want to pay mega bucks for the data.

You could also get a router that supports Gargoyle (https://www.gargoyle-router.com) and impose limits for the kids to prevent them using too much.

Thanks for options given - have contacted a couple of different companies. Kids board in town during the school weeks so they will just have to make the most of it then.

Are there any fixed wireless providers in that area? I always thought that the top of Ruapehu would be a good spot for a fixed wireless operator!!

I too have thought about this...but we run into a limitation....distance.
The height is great - lots of line of sight coverage, but the distance slows things down.
The nearest house to the crater lake is about 15kms. We dont like to push that far as TCP over a half duplex radio link can be quite slow due to the acknowledgement packet delay.
Running a big array of solar panels covered in snow can also be difficult.

For point-to-point dedicated links ($$$) its a great site.
