I'm currently in the US and have roaming enabled on my mobile. Yesterday and today I've been receiving calls from "NZ mobile" numbers that are obviously spoofed. Thus far I've seen the following CLIs:

+64 27 755 900

+64 25 550 241

+64 28 096 158

+64 25 214 573

They're obviously fake as Telecom/Spark never issued 6 digit 027 numbers. 025 was taken off Telecom and put into protected status when the TDMA network was shutdown a decade ago, and the 028 number is way too short as that is managed as an 02xy network prefix range.

I'm guessing that if you actually answer the call you'll get connected to some premium rate service that bilks you...

I've since put my mobile in airplane mode with wifi on.

How could you be charged for a premium rate call if you answer the call? This could only happen if you made a call out

Is it even possible to have a premium rate number that is dialled as a standard mobile prefix? This seems wrong - what's to stop anyone using such a number to generate revenue?

I notice there's no 021 or 022 numbers in your list. I don't know how significant that is though.

Generally the scammers only let it ring once and then hope you'll call the number back. (Which is then one of those premium rate calls)

It's not a one ring hang up thing. I've manually rejected all the calls after a few rings when I've looked at the calling number. Maybe it's some sort of phishing thing? Very puzzling...

These are clearly calls originating from the GCSB's private 025 network. You are now a red flag in the US and though you can checkout anytime, you can never leave:)

Yep the GCSB must still be using their AMPS network..
