Thinking of buying a smartwatch but really want cellular ability so I can be untethered from my cellphone.

The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier 3G can be used with Spark but I would have to have an account with them, get an account for the watch and pay a fee to share data between the two.

The Huawei Watch 2 takes a nanosim so theoretically I could put a 2degrees prepaid SIM in, data share for free and be able to receive calls without paying extra charges.

Anybody know if this would work? Cheers

Any watch with a sim in it will kill the battery as soon as you turn the 3g/lte on.  Read the reviews on the watch.

I have the non cell version of the watch, battery last me from 5am - 9pm and still about 50% however I charge it each night.

Also remember that 2d is turning off 2g next month so it will be using 3g which will drain the battery more.  Also you can't number share so the watch will have a different number.

I have an Omega watch, 21 years now. Only changed the battery five times... The main reason I don't really even consider a smartwatch. I do have a Withings/Nokia Activite - the battery lasts anything between six months and nine months - it counts steps, that's all I want on top of time.

Thanks for the link - looks like its compatible and will work with a SIM here. My plan is to use a prepaid nanoSIM with data sharing so I can access the internet and call forward from my iphone. That way I can receive work calls sans iphone. Battery life won't be a big deal because I will only being doing short stints, like going out for a run.

Hi I use the Huawei Watch 2 LTE daily (I too have never changed the battery laughing).

I have a Vodafone Data SIM in it and it works on 4G nicely. (Not 700Mhz).

The first 2 weeks, the watch would only last 20 hours on a charge. Now I can get over 2 days on it with normal use, with no power saving features enabled.

Pros:

  • Watch performs fast most of the time,
  • Google assistant and voice dictation is great/accurate, but actions are limited.
  • Time is accuratewink
  • Notifications are great and easy to use
  • Steps and heart rate seems accurate
  • Always on display is awesome
  • Screen size is perfect for me
  • Waterproof
  • Can stream music to bluetooth headphones, over 4G when not connected to phone

Cons:

  • Messaging app - App doesn't update your sent messages when utilising 3G/4G - not sure if my message has sent
  • Hangouts - App doesn't update your sent messages when utilising 3G/4G - not sure if my message has sent
  • Facebook Messenger - can't send message without phone
  • My Note 8 recently started draining faster than normal. At the end of each day I only have around 20% remaining. I used to have %50-60. Only two things have changed, I got my watch, and my Note 8 received a new security update (Dec 17). I tend to blame the watch for causing the phone to go flat faster.

Overall I would recommend.

Big note on battery life, bluetooth and 3G/4G doesnt work too well underwater. In fact it sucks the battery faster than you can say pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

If you go swimming with it, best to turn on airplane mode.
