My Xiaomi Mi A2 works ok on close by 4g, getting ok speeds. In my local rural town I'm getting about 55-60 mbps. However the new tower very close to my rural house is not picked up by my phone with either a spark or Vodafone Sim.

If I put either Sim into my wife's iPhone 6 plus it's receives 4g getting about 35-40 mbps. ????

Also neither Sim works on the new tower in an iPhone 5s that otherwise picks up 4g.

Yes I reset network settings, restarted device etc.
Other neighbours and visitors have the 4g working for them or so they say.

Does anyone know why only the fairly old IPhone 6 plus should receive a specific tower signal where other phones dont?.

It's our only hope for internet here as copper is 2mbps

No expert but I would guess your phone doesn't support the specific 4G band used by the tower.

My pick would be your device doesn't supported the band required - which is probably B28 (700Mhz)

Are you on 2degrees and the site is a vodafone one? Because that doesnt roam, only 3g does.

Also battery saving is listed beside 3g so some people turn that on once and forget about it. I cant seem to find an apple list of bands for the iphone 6 and most sites are blocked at work but you need to check that you have band28 on it. 6 is a very old one now and I think that was about the time it was becoming a thing.

Your missing B28.

This happens when you buy imported phones.. It's not the tower, it's your device.

in dialer go *#0011# and it will show the band your on. do this then move away from the tower and do it again,.

like hio77 has said your prob missing band 28 that is 700mhz for nz

So it turns out after much asking, rcg finally says it's towers are 4g only and band B28(700) ONLY. All my phones were brought in NZ and have worked quite fine in city life. Actually have found another of our working phones doesn't have this band. So out of two iPhones and two android phones only one supports B28.

Its a lot harder right now to buy a phone that doesn't support this band but some phones of ours are less than a year old. It would be good if rcg said a little more plainly "if your phone doesn't work, make sure you buy one that supports the b28 700MHz band"

@Abusername These things happen when you buy a imported handsets or have older handsets, So lesson learnt for you then about 4G bands :)

Xiaomi Mi A2 doesn't support B28
If you bought it in NZ it would have been through an importer. Generally this phone is not sold in NZ unless by a direct importer.
Even the Mi store in NZ doesn't sell this phone.
The newer Mi A3 does support B28 though
