I'm interested in using Lync for voice communication. I gather the software supports SIP trunking as long as your SIP provider supports TCP (I'm using 2talk which does). So I've gone ahead and ordered a basic Lync 2013 online account but can't find anywhere where you set that up. Is this only available on the on-premise version of the software and not the online version?

As a side question, I currently have 2talk configured on Android with the built-in SIP client and getting poor battery life. I gather switching to TCP instead of UDP helps increase battery life because it changes to sending a keep-alive signal every 20min or so instead of every min or so for UDP. Is this correct with 2talk and Android SIP, and is this only used for SIP communication, but for the actual phone call does it still use UDP?

As far as I know there are only a couple of online providers that work with (are certified for) lync online. Lync works with SIP trunks, but you need your own on-premises server.

Even if you could hook up lync online, the servers are in Singapore, Europe or US, so the latency might be too high to use with a nz sip service

Lync Online doesn't currently support voice in New Zealand. The Office 365 E4 product includes a license for using Lync On-Premise (and also includes Exchange Unified Messaging which is required for the voicemail component).

As far as NZ SIP providers that support Lync 2013, I believe it is only Kordia. We have tried with a host of other SIP providers over the past few years and none of them work properly, take it from us and save yourselves days of pain.

2 options we can see here would be 1) buy a Lync 2013 Server license and build Lync yourself to integrate with Office 365 for Email/UM/SharePoint or 2) give us a call at MHA Cloud Computing where we have a hosted MS Lync with voice solution that fully integrates/federates with Office 365.

So further checking shows that lync online still doesnt support PSTN voice anywhere in the world. You need to have a "Office 365 dedicated" service which is not the same as the regular Office 365, and its only available to really big clients....

So yeah, if you're looking for Lync with PSTN you can either roll your own or, as Paul suggests, get the hosted option from MHA which is probably the 'path of least resistance' :)
