I need a Wellington-area Asterisk/myPBX expert in the very near future.

I'm helping my brother with a new shop fit out, and assured him that a simple PBX was all he needed (cf. the $200-odd a month for an old style PBX). More fool me, because now its come time to set it up, I can't get the damn thing to go and the pressure is on. I'm looking quite the t1t right about now.

It's a Yeastar MyPBX SOHO with (mostly) Yealink T19P phones (thanks to Hadley at Nicegear).

It all seemed straightforward enough. I've got all the internal extensions set up and working fine. However, when I try to dial out or in (PSTN, using the optional FXO card), it just doesn't seem to want to work.

Dialling out results in the 4-rapid beep tone (engaged? number does not exist? I knew what these meant as a kid).

Dialling in should go to an IVR response. Dialling in does seem to be "answered" but you only hear silence.

Looking at the call records screen on the PBX, the calls are all listed with an "ANSWERED" status.

I've tried to add a 2talk voip line to see if it was something about the PSTN setup or card, but I can't get that to register.

I've tried resetting to factory defaults and re-doing everything but no obvious joy.

I'm sure I'm missing something (probably something obvious) and am really at the limits of what I can do myself. I'm hoping someone in Wellington (shop is in Tory Street) with more knowledge than me has a couple of hours free in the very near future (next few days... pushing my luck).

Do these come with the pstn card pre-configured?

I assume this thing will use Dahdi (could he called zaptel but I would hope not).

I'm guessing it has some rubbish GUI?

Log in to the asterisk cli and type 'dahdi_hardware'. Each card should list itself. The other one would be 'dahdi_scan' which will list avaliable channels. There are a bunch more too but can't remember off the top of my head. Do 'core show help dhadi' to see the other commands. There is one that generates the config file.

If it was me I would stick a low cost Core i3 box with a couple of HDD's in raid and run FreePBX. If you must utilise the PSTN then you can whack the atcom card in. FreePBX is awesome!

Setting up something like that isn't simple if you've never configured it all before.

Can Hadley offer any help?

Is the 0900 SBIDDLE support line @ $500 per minute still available?

You can try contacting Graham at http://www.offthehook.co.nz and see if he can help. I have done a few 2talk installs for him in Auckland. He is Wellington based and does a few phone systems / VoIP etc.

Awesome, thanks! I've left Graham a voice mail and just emailed him. Fingers crossed.

$500 per minute seems eminently reasonable. And I'm sure will strike me as a complete bargain if I'm still tearing my hear out late on Sunday evening - there's a fine line between tinkering an interesting project to learn something new and stomach-churning stress levels. I've now crossed that line.

Yep, I've learned that the hard way. It all seemed so easy too when I was looking into it and watching the quick start video (I even sat through 5 minutes of them showing how to take it out of the box). If it were for me, I'd be happy plugging away at it until I could get it work. But sionce it's for my brother's business I'm totally stressed about the whole thing and just want to pay someone to make my problems go away.

chevrolux: I'm guessing it has some rubbish GUI?

In terms of setting up the PBX, yep, it's all a GUI. I wouldn't have tried a CLI without very explicit instructions. There aren't that many options to configure, but I'm sure I'm just missing something for the NZ PSTN. And it will probably be blindingly obvious in hindsight.

Thanks for the recommendation but I don't work on any Asterisk based phone systems so will be on no help with this one sorry.

Zut. Offthehook don't deal with MyPBX/Asterisk.

Any other suggestions for who to talk to would be most appreciated.

If it's any help at at, here are the relevant screen grabs of the general settings

and the outbound route settings

There aren't that many more settings related to using the PSTN. Or at least that I'm aware of.

vespaman: did you get this sorted?

Unfortunately not. It went back to the supplier yesterday. With some help, we got it to the point where it would dial internal extensions, and receive outside calls, but just would not dial out.

Thanks heaps for the offer, but it's already gone back. It is a shame, because it did seem like a really nice unit. Everyone I managed to speak to seemed quite confounded by not being able to get it to dial out. I can only assume there was some setting somewhere that needed to be changed in the PBX or the phones for New Zealand/Telecom/Spark lines, but nothing seemed to make it work.
