Hi everyone,

Just a couple of newbie questions to check I'm heading on the right track with VOIP.

We are about to move 20kms back into the city to rent a house and need to retain our Spark landline number. We have called Spark who laughed at us. The line is currently on ADSL only and not very fast. (1.5Mbps Down, 0.75Mbps Up) But - we'll be renting in VDSL2/Fibre area.

It's vital we retain our Spark landline number.

So I'm planning on:

(1) Upgrading to a Netcomm NF4V modem (VDSL2 home router)
(2) Purchasing a Yealink SIP-W52P phone
(3) Going to 2talk website and signing up to personal plan (2talk10) - take number with me option
(4) Waiting 10 days for everything to switch over and use new phone on ADSL line for couple of weeks - might be marginal quality sure.
(5) Move to new area taking Spark number with me. (Drink heavily to celebrate)

My questions:

(a) Cunning plan?
(b) Right equipment?
(c) Should I take Naked 80GB plan through 2talk or Spark?
(d) How do I connect at my new rental - ring Spark and say activate line only?

My answers:

a) Muwahaha Yes, cunning and the way to go.
b) See post above.
c) Don't go with Spark, they laughed at you.
d) No call the service provider you will have your VoIP Line with to provide you VDSL + Phone Option and connect as soon as you have access or at least attempt to book in in the day of getting access.

I'm pretty sure a number port on a Spark clothed connection will still result in a disconnection of broadband so your idea won't work as above.

In regards to (a), the answer is yes! :)

FYI, in the old circuit switching world that Spark's internal systems are still based around, the service that would have been used to achieve this solution (and which should have probably been offered to you rather than laughing at you when you contacted them) is called 'Customer Link'.

Basically the service entails a local number on a local exchange (in this instance the number you want to keep, on the same exchange it is currently on) being configured and live but not attached to any copper pair (or UFB ATA service now either, I guess?!). You then have all calls to that number forwarded to your new 'real' number and you get the privilege of paying the per-call forwarding rate which wlll be dependent on how far you are moving. Eg Customer Link can forward to another local number, or a toll, or even a cell. What lucky customers they are, getting to pay a per-call tax for the lack of flexibility in the the providers systems & equipment.

So anyway that's why smart people employ this solution in this situation to work around it.

Even porting to 2talk10 then forwarding all calls to another PoTS (so that you never do any IP) is cheaper than Customer Link!

You're on the right track.

Ah yes sneaky, sorry mainly deal with Business Connections.

Possible Change to:

a) Darn it, yes, not so cunning go without internet connection and landline for 10 days.

I think you can contact the current provider in advance and have them 'port' the number to Customer Link and Naked DSL first? Then lodge the port with 2talk afterwards to go from CL to 2t.

Then the plan becomes cunning again? :)

I know people who order new Customer Link numbers from Spark (just to get a number from Spark's allocations, since they are often well recognised as local numbers by 'locals' in towns), then immediately port them to 2talk as soon as they are live! :)

I'd treat this as two separate orders.
1. Arrange your number port for the day you move, or thereabouts. This should take care of cancelling the current Spark connection. Check with Spark a couple of days later (after successful number port) that your service has been disconnected.
2. Meanwhile: as soon as the place you're moving to is vacant, order your Naked Broadband connection for there through your chosen provider. NB if you still choose Spark, do NOT do this as a move address, treat it as a new and separate connection.

As for providers, either 2talk or WxC would be my choice. NB: WxC do adhere closer to rules for geographical numbers if you are moving between calling areas.

Only if you tell them where you live.

I would go with bigpipe if you want a naked connection at the new place. Much less painful ordering process than spark's one.
