I'm a newbie, but I am looking into going onto VOIP at home for my phone coverage as well. Is the iTalk service from Slingshot any good? What are pros and cons? Is your telephone number still listed in the phonebook?

Welcome to Geekzone!

VoIP has the benefits of lower calling rates, plus a stack of cool features such as call forwarding, conferencing calling etc which normally come bundled in with the line (with a traditional phone line you have to add these features on with additional cost). You can also take your VoIP phone with you anywhere in the world, and as long as their is a suitable internet connection, make calls as though you were at home.

You can also get naked DSL now, which means you don't have to pay a monthly fee for a phone line - you can just pay for your broadband connection. Add a VoIP line to this and you've got broadband + phone. Perfect!

Haven't used Slingshot for awhile, so someone else here will have to comment on their offerings. The WorldxChange VoIP is available here, and their naked DSL offerings are here.

Regarding phone book listing, I think you need to organise this with your new provider whether that turns out to be Slingshot or WorldxChange.

I think Naked DSL is what you are looking for ie a combined Internet and Phone sevice, there a couple of options for this check out the Naked DSL options at the NZ Connections Wiki, they ahve put together a pricing and comparison chart.

There are a couple of options when you get Naked DSL

1. You can keep your number as long as you provider has coverage in that area
2. You can get Naked DSL with a brand new number (once again check that they can supply a number in your local area)

AS for the whitepages, check with the provider you use generally you should have an option to list your number, generally you get 1 free listing.

as for the italk service ....no comment

as for the VFX service....excellent

The iTalk service has a bit of a bad rep.

The 2Talk service is excellent, has great features, is reliable, allows you to connect any SIP compliant device and have incoming numbers in multiple areas.

I may as well add my unbiased oppinion here too. Firstly welcome to geekzone. I have had Xnets VFX service here for just over a year now and it has worked well for me. I have now gone onto naked DSL with Xnet fusion earlier this month and the system hasnt missed a beat. I have tried italk but that only lasted 2 months with me as here in New Plymouth I couldnt have a local free calling number so it was a toll call for me to call someone locally and it was a toll call for anyone local to call me, hence me going onto VFX. I will back up Mavericks last comment "as for the VFX service....excellent"

as per the VFX service. Can you comment on the call quality and reliability of service.
For example - Telecoms pots service I would pretty much rate as 100% reliable and the call quality just fine. Is there any loss in quality in the VFX service?

We've been through the different ITSPs (VoIP providers) and WorldxChange's service is rock solid - good support, good product, we highly recommend it to all our clients. Call quality, if setup correctly, is just as good, even better, than POTS.

I wouldn't put VoIP (in general) at 100% reliable, but it's very, very close.
