Hi,

I am interested in understanding the basic setup of the IPFX softphone software that runs on Windows. The idea is that wherever you are on the internet, you have an extension that can both receive calls and send them is this right? Is there any restriction on ports or server setup that would not allow you to use this software from a standard WiFi router or 3G Wifi hotspot?

You'd really need to contact IPFX to understand how their setup works.

There are plenty of setups that would break a remote softphone.

Got it thanks - but the basic idea is that from an IP connection you could have a softphone app that gives you the ability to call and answer telephone calls wherever you are. As opposed to a PBX where you are tied to a certain office and the phone network is only available from that physical space - is that right? or is the IPFX softphone not actually a true VOIP solution but more of a hybrid?

IPFX have a wide range of product offerings - all with varying infrastructures.

A softphone in general is yes - an IP connection using software on a PC/device providing an endpoint for a phone number of extension.

However - if this is available over 3G/Wifi/External is subject to a ton of variables - including what equipment you have, Firewall and NAT config, etc. Softphones can be used internally to replace desk phones and firewalling/networking is less of an issue. Making that same access available externally is a totally different beast.

I use a different soft-phone system. I have to be located within my office network physically or connect to it via VPN.

OK thanks - if my softphone client connects over tcp and/or udp ports to an internal server....then shouldn't it be a matter of router and DNS config for a mobile client to access the services?

If you have any form of IP PBX you've got to be crazy to allow direct remote access to SIP ports without a hardened SBC for security. You should only allow remote access via VPN or whitelisted IP.
