Hi, all geeks, just wondering how much traffic will, say 6 VOIP users add to naked ADSL link per month? 6GB MAY BE?

I'm thinking move from Slingshot BIG mouth plan ($45 per month) to VFX, but really not sure about the traffic/bandwidth cause the most NZ naked ADSL plan only gives you 6GB per month.

A lot less than 6gig. All depends on hours of talk time but I would be surprised if it got over 1 gig.

If it does gets to much one can just change the codec.....

What not use Xnet's naked DSL, then all your VoIP traffic is free?

Also, be aware that you may not have the necessary bandwidth to run 6 concurrent calls over a naked DSL connection.

The normal rule of thumb 'budget' for SIP VIOP using G729a is 55kb/s per call on non-symetrical circuits ie: 330kb/s if all six people were talking at the same time. (IAX2 is slightly lower, FYI)

That's fine for downstream on ADSL, but you're going to be pushing your luck with the upstream.

I get about 120kbps upstream here at home, and I've tested up to three converstaions, but I get jitter/quality issues. It's rock solid with two...

(Yes, I know that G729a codec is 32kb/s, this is a rule of thumb including SIP overheads, and some fiddle factors)

For data volume 5Mb/minute per call online is a good place to start with your estimates.

Bearing in mind of course that if you've got 6 phones on a PABX it's unlikely that you'll ever use 6 trunks simultaneiously... A business with 200+ phones might only have 15 lines coming in and never have a problem... People don't actually spend all day on the phone, unless it's a call centre, which is a whole other can of worms.

As Nate has already pointed out.. if you have VFX/DVX services and your access is with WorldxChange your VOIP traffic is not charged.

To state the obvious... I assume you do charge traffic on your network to other SIP/VoIP providers?

Straight from the horse's mouth:

What data traffic is accountable?
Xnet Stream, River, Flood & Fusion plans measure all National & International usage. Local traffic is not measured.
This means that your Email, Xnet VFX (Voice over Broadband) & Xnet hosted content and game servers (such as Recoil) do not count against your overall usage.

Traffic to other providers is charged.

Depends where you measure the data on the network, what types of datalink layer are in use,at what level you are measuring in addition to those things which everyone else have mentioned, codec, sample rate, frame size, if your using IAX2 for inband signalling and RTP to a common endpoint for concurrent calls... What might be 32kbps of ingress/egress IP packets at your ADSL router might turn out to be 90kbps of data link layer frame/cells on provider network for instance (figures picked out of thin air).
