Just joined slingshot today, I have my broadband and an iTalk VOIP phone servoce through them.

They were absolutely no help at all when I asked how to set anything up. No way I was going to pay $130 for the ATA advertised on teir website either. Silly me, I thought this VOIP thing would be easy...

So anyway, I have a cruddy dynalink wireless router already, had a nice lynksis one but every time the air con, drier, washing machine etc turned on, it turned off then back on again. I chose to get a cheap router through slingshot when I joined.

It's all plugged in correctly but I have no idea how to access the ATA (lynksis RT31P2) which I bought secondhand on trademe.

I looked at the list of SHCP clients in the dynalink, can only see the two computers and PS3's, so does it not get assigned an IP address?

I then looked online for a use manual that says the default IP address is 192.168.1.15 but no luck there.

The ATA is plugged into the dynalink, and the telephone is plugged into the ATA. All I want it for is using the phone.

Anyone know how to access it? Emailed the person I got it from but nbo reply.

The RT31P2 is a router, it will not be requesting an IP on the lan side, it will be issuing them to other devices. Plug your PC into it, see what IP you get, and what the gateway is, and then put the gateway IP into the browser

The RT31P2's are horrible buggy devices that IMHO have terrible audio quality.

Get yourself a Linksys PAP2T or better still a SPA 2102 Then search this forum re set-up to iTalk
I started with a RT31IP no end of trouble. Its now in some recycling outfit/landfill. (the best place for it)

Bit late to buy something else now, I am on a very tight budget. No job after being a student at Ames IT (what a bad idea THAT was) and 23 weeks pregnant. I would happily have just bought the ATA slinghsot sell if I could have afforded it.

Thanks for the help anyway.

It doesn't look that tricky to setup, I figure out how to get to the configuration page, I just need to know the basic setup information. slingshot are no help

I think many VoIP providers would be stumped by an ATA thats trying to be a router, since its not picking up a dynamic IP. Hopefully you set it up to pickup an IP from your modem.

Once your into the voip setup, tell it there's no firewall and to send keep-alive traffic to the SIP proxy so that the modem keeps the connection open for incoming calls. Slingshot have all their regional proxies listed on the italk setup FAQ I think. Dont swear at the voip box coz ur baby will hear it!!

Time to find a new industry!

Too late for that, I'm about ready to throw the damn thing at the wall, way beyond the swearing stage here!

I wish I never bought it now, should have just sucked it up and stuck the slingshot provided one on the creditcard. Might still do that.

The WAN side can be setup to get an IP from the router, but there is usually no management available on it.

Even with the devices Slingshot sell you still need to manually configure a large number of settings in the settings in your device to make it work optimally.

VoIP providers like WxC offer full provisioning of their VFX devices - simply plug it in to your router, provide them with the MAC address of the device and it'll download all of the settings from their provisioning server and within a couple of minutes you'll be up and running and able to make and receive calls. For somebody who knows nothing about VoIP this is the best option. Unfortunately neither iTalk or 2Talk provide a service like this.

I would happily have gone with world exchange but was a previous customer and had several issues with their service. I had a 12 month contract and left early and got charged an early disconnection fee, which I declined to pay on the grounds that they were not providing the service they should have been. They weren't keen on taking me back. They did eventually agree that I shouldn't have to pay the fee but it took a long time.

slingshot have given me a few details to enter, but it didn't make anything work of course:

Display Name: (This would be your ITALK Phone # in the following format) 6499291004 64( for NZ) 9 (or the area code if it was Auckland as in the example)
User ID: Is the same as Display Name
Authentication User Name: Same as the Display Name
Authentication Password: This is a password that is in your account here at Slingshot. ( You may have been provided this on earlier phone calls with our Support Team)
Registration / Proxy Server For the above example this would be akl.italk.co.nz (If you had an Auckland Phone number) If your phone number belongs to a different calling region, please either a) respond to this email or b) Contact our helpdesk team for more immediate support.

At least with their default hardware they might know more about setting it up? Maybe?

One of the problems I had with setting up iTalk was the Authentication password. This is not the password for your account, but a seperate one. If you login to their website, under your phone settings it should be there. If not, ask them for it. I never received the email I was meant to when I signed up with all of the settings etc.

Other than this it is working fine and am happy with it.
