I have done a bit of reading on phone impedance etc on this forum and elsewhere but as a newbie I am still a bit uncertain on what I need (sorry if it is a dumb question!!).
I have set up a SPA8000 ATA and have cat5e cables running in a star configuration out to where the Uniden FP1100 phones are to be installed. The longest cable run is 45m . What the best wall socket to use? I guess the phones will come with BT plugs, If I use BT sockets will there be the correct impedance matches with the CAT5e and the ATA?

RJ45 in all cases, the Phones will have RJ12 to RJ12 cables most likely and if not easy to get, RJ12 will happily plug into the Rj45... Forget BT

RJ12 also trashes the outer conductors of the RJ45 socket if I recall correctly. Unless you're using 8P4C RJ45 sockets I would not recommend doing this, especially on the long term (done it in the short term when i've not had the right adaptors).

Thanks for the advice, glad I asked. For the sake of other newbies like myself I found this instructive  http://www.3cx.com/PBX/FXS-FXO.html

Your dead rite about that.. The number Of RJ45s I've seen over the years damaged when people force fones with RJ11s on them into the socket.

Is their any particular reason not to use the BT sockets as I have just received the phones and they don't have a detachable cord and to cut off the BT plugs to crimp on a RJ45 plug would seem to be a retro step?

That's as bad as our parent company in Ozz who supplies all our fones with RJ11s on them.  We have to cut 99% off and replace them with RJ45s. No matter how hard we try they  won't budge as it seems what's for Australia is good for the world....

No reason not to use them - except for the fact a cat5e RJ45 keystone jack is ~$4 vs $25 for a BT one. Considering the cost of a RJ45 plug at ~20c and the 60 seconds to chop the BT plug off and replace it that's a big saving!

I am surprised and disappointed too I have 2 Dick Smith slimline phones ( I think they go for $20 each) which have detachable cords and seem much more solidly built than the Uniden FP1100 for which I paid $30 each and have built in cords.
I havent compared the voice quality yet but I paid the extra as I have always had good service from the Uniden cordless phones one of which I have owned for 20+ years.

You can get RJ11/12 plugs that have groves in the outer shoulders that mimic the location of the out pins of an RJ45. DSE used to have these (Digtor brand) but of late I have noted DSE is getting out of real electronic parts so dont be surprised if they are not there.

But to the OP, forget BT sockets, just go RJ45.

Its too easy to crimp on the better RJ45 plugs. If you don't have BT sockets in place then try to standardise on minimum Cat5e for everything. At least you should be able to swap for an ethernet device oneday if you need to switch from ATA to a VoIP phone or have other devices to plug in.

Time to find a new industry!

Lol its definitely not retro, retro would be the other way around!

You can get some of these:

Not to sure what you are asking, but if you can use RJ45-RJ12 cables rather than RJ12-RJ12 (or RJ11-RJ11) then all the better as you wont risk damaging your sockets that way.
