Hi we are just in the process of purchasing a property just out of cust where there is no phone line in the road and it will be many thousands of dollars to put one in so normal phone line and adsl is out of the question. Also there is no vodafone 3g coverage so their wireless home phone and broadband is out of the question.

So what I was thinking would be the best solution is to run a Telecom Turbo Wireless Router 3G21WZ on telecom xt data plan (XT is full reception) with a Linksis PAP2T so I can run round with my standard cordless phone and have a local number for people to call me on. Does anybody know if this combination would work well enough? Or is there a better cheaper solution to my problem? Any advice would be much appreciated and I'm not really a geek so simple is better :)

I am similar. I have 3G Bandlux router (vodafone) contected to a yagi. This feeds BB to a Linksys Wrp400 ata. I use 2talk. I pick up of a cell tower 30km away. for it to work you need the best gear. I have been experimenting for a few months and have gone from out of space calls to reasonable good with reasonable reliability. I have heard vf may be better than xt for voip but Im not sure. I think you really need a yagi antennea for best working unless you are very near a cell tower. I can get it going ok without antenae if Im within a km of a tower. Cost wise it works out excellent and 2talk seem to be the cheapest with tonnes of free features and free minutes.

I don't have personal experiance with running this over XT, however there have been several threads recently, including this one, where XT and VOIP just don't mix.

Ah well nothings ever easy is it. But given that 0800 numbers can be called off your cellphone for free anyway and there is no vodafone 3g coverage guess I dont have many options... unless i can get a vodafone wireless homephone if they run on 2g and run XT for data only. But saying that even their 2g out that way is sketchy I think and XT is full bars on my phone which is why I was hoping there was an easy way to make this work....

I saw in the Christchurch EOC a device about the size of a router that connects to XT and lets you plug a regular telephone into it (Like an ATA, but connects as a mobile phone rather than voip through mobile broadband). I suspect this was a special device only for Gen-i customers (like CCC) but there may be consumer models available.

Voip over the XT network is fine. If you have good reception there it should go fine. I use voip on my SIP capable iPhone directly (no need for wires adapters, cordless phones etc). In some marginal reception areas I get call drops/lag. But i feel that is because my older (3GS model) device doesn't support HSUPA. (have tried using a mifi that does support HSUPA has been faultless so far)
If you can set your device to use the lower bandwidth G729 codec you will do better over the cellular data network.
The only known unresolvable problem reported in these forums is the case where a call is answered immediately (ie voicemail clearing) on XT the call will drop inexplicably. I have never had the problem as I don't use voicemail on voip.

Actually it's not fine, try ringing an 0800 line where there is automated attendant, part from that XT is good and I prefer it myself to the Voda network, performance wise for me it works better IMHO, but this issue is a bit of issue for VOIP services, I don't know if it will be a high priority with Telecom or not, but Niel (talkit) if your reading this feel free to drop me a line if Telecom is or know who Telcom is interested and I will assist with some accounts

Do you have regular voice Vodafone coverage? If so just pay $15 to get an 0800 number (once, not per month), then you pay 50c/minute for people to call you. Might be cheaper and easier than messing around with voip, unless you make or receive a lot of calls.

Vodafone used to have /have a similar product called "home phone wireless" - theirs is bonded to a regular panasonic cordless phone, but I am fairly sure you could wangle it with a regular corded phone.

Hi,

I've set this up in the middle of the bay of islands on an island. Turbo Router with a Yagi, get's about 11mb/s down and 8mb/s up with latency of 80ms round trip to auckland. It's also consistent, I set up 4 pings every minute to run in a batch script so that the I.P doesn't change on Telecom.

Not only is the island using it for Eftpos they also have a 2km wireless network using 1mw engenius access points this enables them to use wifi VOIP phones to 2talk. There are also a couple of SPA942 phones in use with no issue.

Fastest island around :)
