We are shortly moving from Wellington to Blenheim and will probably get VDSL2 through either SNAP or Unleash. I'm getting confused (yes its a mental block or overthinking) with exactly how porting our current Wellington based phone number to a VOIP provider (either 2Talk or XNet) will work in relation to local and toll calling for us and for incoming calls. If we port our 04 970xxxx number to VOIP will Blenheim people pay tolls to call the 04 number ? Will Wellington callers have to dial 04 970xxxx or still just 970xxxx and will they pay tolls ? Is our 'local calling area' Blenheim or Wellington ? And lastly depending on how these various questions actually work would we be better to get a new telecom issued number in Blenheim and then port that to VOIP and then use our original 04 970xxxx number as a local number for Wellington callers by then having that ported to our VOIP supplier ? With Voip there is no barrier of location. so if you ported your 04 number then moved to Blenheim and used your 04 number over voip, it would be a toll call for people in Blenheim to call you and it would be a toll call for you to call Blenheim. However it would still be free for Wellington people to call you and it would be a local call for you to call someone in Wellington. This maybe a desirable effect? It depends what you are wanting to do, if you just want to make and receive local calls in Blenheim get a Blenheim number. if you want to keep your old wellington number too get two voip lines with a blenheim number on one line and your old Wellington number on the other. With Voip there is lots of possibilities.
I think you have answered everything in one go (i've swapped 4 emails with 2Talk and was still confused and unclear !) Basically i want to try to keep the Wellington number as its a business number ive had for a long time and matches my celfone number.
What you can also do is port over your Wellington number to either Xnet or 2Talk as an incoming call number only, attached to your new Blenheim number so people in Wellington can still call you for free, while at the same time you can use the Blenheim number to make & receive free local calls in Blenheim but a call to Wellington will still be a toll call from Blenheim to Wellington.
I believe 2talk offer a geo based call routing on outgoing calls so if you have your blenheim and wellington numbers both with 2talk under the same account, it will automatically use the wellington number when you call the wellington LCA and you will get your 2000 free minutes that way.
