I have a pentium 4 3 Ghz system with intel 915 chipset for 2 and a half years without nay problems. I recentlly installed a 300Gb seagate disk and 512 mb kingston DDR400 RAM to and changed my monitor 17" Wide Acer monitor. I formatted the new hard disk and after successful installation of windows Xp pro edtion i found that my Pc keeps on restarting over and over again sometimes only.

I will be able to log in and and see the desktop screen and all the icons and it will keep restarting. I have formatted the hard and reinstalles but still same. i have a leadtek tuner card, audigy4 sound card and a geforce6500 256mb graphics card all was working fine for the past one year. now my total memory is 1 Gb knston DDR400. Norton antivirus 2007 detects no problems.

I would guess it's the ram maybe. see if u can try a different stick into it.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
The actual problem is PC gets rebooted over and over again but this happens only at startup. It the startup happens to be successful then no further problems would occur no matter how long the PC is kept on. This problem is intermittent in nature.

Do you think thats RAM sticks with chip on one side will be incompatible with ones with chips on both side?
Last year i upgraded my RAM like the above to make 1 GB (dual channel) and it did not show any speed so i removed one of the 512 Mb sticks. This year I bought one stick identical to the one in my PC (chips on both side) and experiencing the rebooting problem. motherboard is intel 915GAVL. power supply is 350W. do you think it because PS is unable to provide enough current??

Also another problem I have is sometimes when I depress the PC on push botton it does start. I mean power led and the fans would start but as soon as I release the button all gets off. In these cases I have to do is keep it pressed with my fingeer for about 6 seconds. If it dosent work like that I have to unplug the CPU from the power socket and then plug it again and then start and it will be successful. what do u thin of that?

As advised I have removed one of the 512 Mb sticks and will monitor for 3 days if the prob occurs thanks again. Hope to hear from u again.

Download and run the Microsoft OCA Memory Test. You will need to burn it to a CD, boot from the CD. Leave it running all night. If you have any faulty RAM you will know next morning.

the memory test prove to be Ok. And I havent noticed any rebooting problems since the last time I swapped the RAMS
its been 3 to 4 days now must be that problem might have cleared after reseatring the modues and right now its working fine in the dual channel mode. Also I did remove the sata cable of an unsed 80 Gb hard drive in which the only the power cable had been disconnected previosly. But now i removed the sata data cable as well,,,, might have caused due to this what do u think.

Well, those are lot of variables we were not made aware before - cables, badly seated RAM and other things... If we knew about this sure the first suggestion would be to "clean up" first.

But good to see it's working again.

This is a message i got today while working on the internet today. I havent come across this kingd of a message in years what do you reckon......

It could be faulty memory, faulty hard drive, faulty motherboard or faulty OS installation. If it happens again then start by updating all drivers from the manufacturers' websites, updating the BIOS, then reinstalling the OS, then testing each component separetely.

I had similar problems installing a RAM module in my PC, the RAM slot was empty for so long dust had spoiled the contacts in there, I cleaned it out with and air-compressor, 800grain sandpaper and a prozone pen. just check that the spring-contacts in the RAM slot are shiny and clean, if that RAM slot was empty for a while and your PC is in a dusty environment.

it might not be that simple, but simple things first :-)
usually a power supply will fail before most other components too, especially the power supplies that come with most cheap bling cases.

Another thing is to check the cables - the HDD cables could be faulty or need some tightening...

I dont know if its related to thids or not but for the first time I noticed that ny Pc had showed a message that says it has rub out of virtual memory and it increasing the size of the page file.... The Pc was lying idle at that time . On task manager the page file showed 1.6Gb ... it used to be something around 600Mb before...... After restarting the PC page file is back to normal again what could be the cause of this.... Is it due to faulsy memory..... I have 1 Gb of DDR400 operating in dual channel mode???
