Hi

Can anyone recommend a safe (free) alternative to Winzip?

please!

I keep forgetting my trial version of winzip has expired which means I can't open zipped files... and I refuse to pay for something that used to be free on older versions of Windows OS.

I use 7-Zip. It's free, open source, and does pretty much everything that WinZip did last time I looked at WinZip.

The 7z format cam sometimes give significantly better compression too - it does for web server logs, for example.

I like the others use 7zip. To make the transition easier set the context menus to show zip instead of 7z

winzip is still a thing? dont think i have touched that in years!

windows can create and open zip files as part of the operating system since vista/7

I haven't used WinZip in more than a decade, but I remember paying for it back in the 90s. Was it really free at one point?

Anyway, I use Windows' built-in (de)compressor.

I use 7.zip and Winrar.

Generally 7zip is preferred. But winrar is needed for some multi-part .rar files. Also, winrar will uncompress .tgz (gzip/tar) in one step.

FYI PeaZip is 7zip with a nicer graphical front end
