hi,

i got a new computer today with vista home basic. i went to install vista and everything was smooth for a few mintues. then it came to " where do you want to install windows?". theres nothing to select from, so i went "load driver" and it said insert the media, so i inserted my intel disk with the drivers, and it says "no device drivers were found, make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers". i dont know much about computers, so im not sure if this is a simple or complex problem, but nay help or advice would be appreciated.

my computer contains
CPU INTEL CORE 2 DUO E4600 LGA775 2.40GHz
HDD WESTERN DIGITAL 160GB 7200RPM 8MB
MEM CORSAIR PC5300 VS 1GB DDR2 x2
MBRD INTEL DG33FBC DESKTOP BOARD

Looks like it could be to do with the HD controler.

Is it a Sata/SCSI Hard Disk?
If so make sure you have something with the correct drivers for it.

umm i know its not sata, so i assume SCSI. in the description, it included that it was IDE

I doubt it would be scsi if it says IDE then that is what it would be.

Do you get to the part where it formats the disk?

it only goes up to where to install windows and then it gets stuck, as it doesnt show a location and puts me in an endless loop. theres no option as yet to format the disk

Did you ring up the vendor from where you got the computer and ask what type of disk is it?

Only other thing I could suggest would be to either go to the manafacture of the PC or motherboard and see if they have windows Vista drivers on their site as the CD provided might not have up to date drivers.

if you have no floppy drive you would have to either burn the drivers on to cd/dvd or a usb key might work.

I know this is not of much help now, but here is a piece of advice to others reading this thread: if you have a computer with pre-installed OS and you don't have experince with installation then better ask to someone else to do it. Most companies will supply a restore disc that will allow you to recover from this kind of problems - make sure you have this disc before starting.

Back to your problem. It sounds like you need a specific driver so that the OS can "see" this disc. You should ask the company where you bought this from how you can get this disc.

Also note this may have invalidated the warranty on this computer.

sounds like the drive is just a si=mple IDE drive, not SCSI or SATA (they would have said if it was sata).
i looked on the intel website for drivers for your board ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2781&OSFullName=Windows+Vista*+32&lang=eng&strOSs=164&submit=Go%21#DRV )but couldnt see any relating to IDE.

so did they give you a pc without a running operating system?

no, they wanted $150 to put it together and my bro said he could do it for free. we didnt guess it would be this much of a problem. i tried boot from a xp disk to format the hard drive on the advice a friend and it said no hard drive was found and set up could not continue. so perhaps something is wrong on the inside. i had a quick look and everything appears t be ok, but im not really sure so ill have to get him to come over and have another look.

If you check the BIOS (press "F2" while the pc is booting) does it list a hard drive? or just you dvd drive?

I see so many threads with problems installing XP and Vista due to hard drives. What has CHANGED in the last few years? Because I've never struck such problems installing Windows until now.

Referring to freitasm's post, I would regard myself as being fairly experienced with installing Windows (due to having to reinstall it so many times...), and yet this would trip me up too, it seems.

I have no idea even what a SATA drive IS. I would presume that my drive is IDE as I have in the past, but given that this is a brand new machine (as of mid-2007), I'm guessing it is SATA?

When I come to clean re-installing Windows Vista, I'm guessing that I need to have HDD drivers ready to avoid these problems?

If you vendor doesn't provide drivers (unless if its a assembled desktop), then probably your vendor is doing something wrong here. But am sure 90% of the laptop will not be a problem as they cross the OEM stage.

i took the HDD back and it turns out it was faulty, so they replaced for free and now all my computer works fine. Thanks for the help anyways

My advice - buy a Seagate next time! They seem to be most reliable.
