hi guys help!!!!!!!
i have a t40 ibm thinkpad
somebody has tried to load anti viuruses and for some reason a firewall wich i cant understand as xp has its own!!
now my problem is tht when the laptop starts it goes thru the password screen then stops loading when my background shows up
no icons or toolbars on the screen.
tried starting it in safe mode wont accept my password!!
im at a loss please somebody help me as this happens to be my works cpu!!!!

when you start up into safe mode have you tryed the login administrator and leave the password blank?

Does ALT CTRL DEL do anything?

if that is no good you could boot from the xp cd into the recover console and stop the services manually if you know how to use the command line.

But considering it is your "work" pc and people should not be installing software on it I would say it would be pritty locked down on the password side of it.

Might be a trip to the IT Dept on monday.

thanks for the advice, tried the administrator user name no joy.
obviously this laptop was setup up by the cpu guy at work hes been gone now bout 7 yrs and i have a new laptop this is my old one
i "borrowed" for home. nobody nos the password and i have no xp setup disc i cant help thinkin there must be away of getting past this safe mode password!?
anty help greatly appreciated.

Another option that would be worth a try would be to try the Last Knows good Configuration

What you have to do is turn off the laptop

After the Post/Bios screen (the one that shows up with IBM on it when you turn the laptop on) press the F8 buttom a few times and a few otpions should show up.
Select the Last Knows good Configuration and see what happens

yeah ive tried that option mate didnt get anywhere with that!!
cntlr alt del does nowt eihter
does having two firewalls cause it to act funny?

My guess is as good as yours could be the virus scanner or the firewall that is causing the issues.

I am all out of idears without the admin password.

Unless you have something like minipe you will have to get your IT person to get it sorted.

Someone else might have some more idears.

I did a google search, and I came up with this link:

It offers links to several tools that you can use to try and recover the admin password.

And as to why a second firewall was installed, it is actually recommended to install an extra firewall in addition to XP's. The default XP firewall only provides protection for inbound access (from the Internet to your computer), and not outbound access (from your computer to the Internet). So if your computer had become a zombie PC and started sending out spam to other computers, without outbound protection there would be no way for you to know or prevent it. That's really the main reason why many people install an additional firewall. Furthermore, the default XP firewall doesn't offer you as many advanced customization features as other firewall software like ZoneAlarm do.

It is true that with two firewalls turned on, there can be some compability issues. However, most firewall software automatically disable the built-in XP firewall when you install them to avoid such problems.
