I have finally given in and done the windows 10 upgrade, from windows 7. Have done this on 2 PCs (so far) in the household, one PC has this issue, the other does not.

When trying to play a CD via Windows Media Player, I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.", and the tracks will not play.

I have tried several different CDs to ensure it is not the CD, and I can play them via iTunes and VLC Media Player, so it is not a physical problem with the CD drive. There were no issues before the upgrade.

I am using a Dell computer, i5-2320 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 8GB RAM, windows 10 home edition (64-bit).

Anyone have any ideas. I've done quite a bit of googling over past few days, but could not find anyone else with such an issue.

When you upgrade to 10, many programs become obsolete and orphaned because 10 doesn't come with them, but due to the upgrade, are still there.

I believe that's where the issue is. Solution ... Umm... Good luck. Maybe buy a Mac.

I bet the next three replies would be people declaring theirs work fine, with little hint of a solution ...

There is a Media Windows Universal app now that will play the content Windows Media Player managed before. In any case I always used VLC because it cover so many more formats.

Thanks for your reply joker97, however as I mentioned in my original post, I have upgraded 2 PCs so far (both with similar specs), the other works fine. For the most part it works fine, everything else it previously did except play CDs.

My example is the calculator from Windows 8. Worked fine until one day, it just died. Too bad none of my Windows 10 apps Inc the 10 calculator work.

now it's been upgraded try doing a clean install and see if the problem persists remember to back up any data you wish to keep first though
