So I thought I start a thread on the new Creators Update so people can report back what their experiences are. I have build 15063 which seems to be widely touted as RTM.

I updated a secondary machine and already the wheels are off the bus! I should be surprised, but sadly not really.

My Start Menu was wiped clear of my customizations, all my shortcuts are gone, and replaced with icons I don't have any use or desire for. To top it off, there are lots of icons with a "download" looking icon on them, with no tool tip.

Decided I'd manually restore the shortcuts by recreating them, so typed in the name of a program, right click > add to start. What appears is a GUID looking shortcut that does nothing when clicked.

Anyone else updated? Having any experiences worth sharing ? (good and bad).

What I'm most looking forward to is Creators update coming to Server 2016.

Shocked?  Me too.  Checked Windows update on my Server 2016 Standard box today.

I run the insider builds on my main PC. Haven't had any issues so far. I really like the custom DPI scaling that comes with it. Probably the most useful new feature for me.

Yes, I have run the insider builds for a long time. What I have found frustrating since W7 days, is that for me on the whole, the insider builds are much more stable than RTM. It's consistent, W8, W8.1, W10 all the same.

I bet this update resets a bunch of stuff to defaults, like networking, it loses static IPs. Every time there's a significant update it takes a while to get the computer to work properly again.

Hence my start menu and shortcuts in OP. Bunch of stuff there I never wanted and have no need for.

I bet it resets file associations & default programs.
MS are determined that we DONT use Acrobat Reader & use Edge instead :-)

Possibly more programs disabled or removed : eg some AV, older versions of Office will get removed (even though they 100% work in 10)

"A new Paint 3D application included with Windows 10 allows you to work with and create 3D models."

Why? Why spend time on this kind of app that should obviously be a third party application?

"Windows now comes with a “View 3D Preview” app that allows everyone to open 3D models, view, rotate around, and zoom in."

I've never seen one of these files in the wild.

"You’ll be able to create a custom space in virtual reality and decorate it with your own furniture and apps, like you would another room. Apps can be placed on shelves. "

Microsoft Bob...

"Most excitingly, though: Microsoft is partnering with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create mainstream mixed reality headsets."

Which will go the way of 3D TV.

"Microsoft Edge has always been a multi-process web browser, but Microsoft redesigned its architecture. Long story short, Edge should be more stable, more responsive to input, and more resistant to slow or frozen web pages."

Annoying how an "Modern app" such as Edge can only get updated features and bug fixed with a full OS release.

"Cortana..."

Wake me up when this is available in New Zealand.

"Control Panel Is Harder to Get To"

Oh dear $deity.

"Skype SMS Forwarding"

Only with the Skype Preview...

There are LOTS of good things though - including the VPN connection from the notification tray, etc. But some of this stuff seems like a waste of time that shouldn't be in the main OS. But yes, if it's stable and fast, I am happy with it. Just ignore the bloat.

My bet is it doesn't reset your file associations. These things were bugs, they were always bugs and we believed we fixed them all. If not let us know, they are bugs and we will fix them.

Yes we uninstall incompatible software and try to reinstall compatible versions. Possibly choose to use an AV vendor that is modern.

Can you put this feedback into Feedback Hub. No one that matters at Microsoft will read this GZ thread and do anything about it as we need logs not anecdotes.

Is there more to this story?
What 3rd party antivirus or disk encryption or application control whitelisting/blacklisting apps or 3rd party start menus are you running maybe?

We've literally done millions of upgrades to v1703 and would not be releasing this if it screwed over start menus.

Did you - can you please, log these things as bugs in Feedback Hub

The things you describe are bugs and they will be fixed when we know about them.

None of your customizarions should be getting reset to defaults, ever.

I update my PC every night and never have this issue with "it takes a while to get my computer working properly" but I don't use static

Never?! Really? With due respect, I could understand infrequently, rarely, even next to never, but never. Wow.

My entire start menu is full of stuff I've not had ever before. With the two exceptions of the ones I have just added.

https://www.screencast.com/t/Wqm4sMYHKuY.

Two reboots seems to have fixed the fact my start menu (neither screen) would open, and my arrows, which are now icons.

Not sure why there would be a requirement for a Xbox Icon on my start menu on my domain connected PC.

Sure, I can pass this onto someone via the feedback app, but surely it shouldn't really need someone to specifically mention that an xbox icon likely has no reason to be on a domain PC? Nor Eclipse Manager or Photoshop Express (Which I didn't not install FTR).

Sorry maybe confused - I'm referring to "My Start Menu was wiped clear of my customizations, all my shortcuts are gone, and replaced with icons I don't have any use or desire for. To top it off, there are lots of icons with a "download" looking icon on them, with no tool tip.

I've never ever seen customizations wiped clear or shortcuts gone, those found like bugs v
Consumer Experience apps like Photoshop you mention being installed is a feature that you can disable in Enterprise edition.

Xbox app, yes this is expected, which is already addressed

There are fixes in the works for this, with those delivered in two phases:

· When RS2 (Creators Update- v1703) is installed, apps that the user had previously uninstalled will not be put back.  (Windows already tracks the list of removed apps.)

· When RS3 is installed, apps that the IT admin has de-provisioned will not be put back.  (RS2 give Windows the ability to keep track of what apps were de-provisioned, so that RS3 and beyond will not put them back.)

See https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mniehaus/2016/08/23/windows-10-1607-keeping-apps-from-coming-back-when-deploying-the-feature-update/ for shorter-term workarounds.
