Hi,

Recently I've been having some trouble with Vista freezing. It seems to happen when I plug my iPod in, or when I open Windows Media Player, but doesn't always (Its very random). When it freezes nothing responds, the mouse doesn't move, Ctrl - Alt - Del does nothing and even my iPod doesn't recognise its connected, its like the computer is completely dead.

Also for some other reason, completely unrelated to the above problem I believe. Is that the computer has installed a floppy disk drive. I have never connected a floppy drive to this computer so I found that to be strange.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Computer Specs:

Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1
Core 2 Duo Q6600 Quad
Asus P5K-E motherboard
4Gb Corsair memory
MSI Geforce 8800GTS 512mb
Seagate 500Gb HDD

I've had a lockup too, this evening. I've also had a few Blue Screens since SP1. Something that hasn't happened in the previous 18 months with Vista.

I'm using Vista 32 Ultimate SP1. Just loaded nVidia 174.74 Beta driver and response times have halved.

I've noticed that if I open windows media player when I first boot the computer won't freeze and I can play music no problem. But if I close it and open it again it will freeze instantly. I don't get any blue screens. I've heard that 64bit vista has some problems with drivers.

I've had nothing but problems ever since I brought this computer, first a faulty mother board then a fault graphics card.

Its the strangest computer problem I've ever seen.

I have seen these problems countless times. There are two main causes:

1) Faulty memory. Get a hold of memtest86+ and run that to check
2) Nvidia drivers, these are the cause of about half of all Vista BSOD's, lockups and crashes. Forceware 169.25 WHQL is the best driver release to be using unless you have a 9 series card.

from those specs does not sound like a laptop lol, my responce was going to be are you running while sitting it on the blankets on your bed, i have seen heaps of people with this issue, but does not sound like your case.

Hu? did i do that?
16Mb (EDO RAM), K6-II processor, 2Mb of onboard graphics. 32k dial up modem. 12 speed CD ROM. 5¼-inch floppy drive. 500Mb HDD.

I ran memtest and came back with no errors. So I formatted the harddrive and reinstalled windows and all the drivers, which appeared to fix the problem, for about a day. Now its back to doing it only when my iPod is connected. I'm stumped.
