Hi there,

I am getting the following message every now and then and my ACER Extensa 2304LC is running really slow.  I've virus checked it with  avast and i wonder if i've deleted a file/s.  This is the message I am getting; Exception EOIeSysError in module ACER.SCR at 0004C6BD.  The specified module could not be found.

thanks ahead of time!
Anna

A .scr file is a screen saver. Change your current screen saver to something else. Perhaps this one is corrupted or missing something?

Mybet the avast found that your screen saver contained a virus. deleted the file now when your screen saver trys to turn on it says there is a missing file. turn the screen saver off alltogether by right clicking the desktop, left click properties and going to the screen saver tab.

you say you running slow in general. i suggest running these programs in safe mode making sure they are uptodate

get to safe mode by taping f8 on start up. choose safe mode with networking so you can update your programs if needed. i always do the updates until they say you are uptodate as sometimes an update is required then after that it will update again

first
combofix from bleeping computers

spybot 1.6 (dont get any thing other than 1.6 as it could be a virus.)

malware bytes

if you want

hijack this and post the report back here and i will take a look at and tell you what to remove.

should get you started other than doing a full clean out which has taken me over 6months to learn how to do properly. (still learning bloody viruses)

cheers

Hu? did i do that?

Be a little careful with those recommendations. It's possible to damage your OS with combofix. From a support website:

Due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer.

The above paragraph is taken from another support forums' malware removal guide. That page was linked from here.

There should be absolutely no issues with running the other tools listed above.

Slow running can have a number of causes in addition to malware. These include, in the order I find easiest to deal with:
-Disk nearing maximum capacity, (perform a disk cleanup)
-Disk hasn't been defragged in a long time (defrag the disk)
-Too much software installed that decides it needs to start with Windows (configure it not to unless you need it to run at start)
-Malware
-Software compatibility/installer issues (can be a lengthy trial and error process to find it, unless you're fortunate. Last one I looked at took over 8 hours to sort.)
-Hardware problems (overheating is the most likely. You generally get very noticeable errors/crashes with hardware problems.)

Once the malware scan/s complete, post back and report if the problem appears cured. If not, it's likely to be one of the areas I listed.
