When shuting down my computer the windows update began running and says do not turn power off to the computer. However inadvertanty the power was switched off. Now the windows screen loads then freezes on a nasty blue screen.

Please Help.

you nee a copy of windows that matches the windows key that should be on you pc/laptop if its a laptop sticker will be on the botom i sugest you write it down while the laptop is off

set you bios to boot from cd pop the windows disk in the drive.

when you start the computer it will say press any key to boot from cd.

a blue screen will pop up press r for repair type 1 for the disk drive that you want it will be displayed in a list shouldnt have a password so just hit enter when it akses you if it needs a password it will be admin or administrator.

type the following

fixmbr
fixboot

carnt rember if it needs a gab between the boot and the fix or mbr so try both

now type this

chkdsk /p

reboot the computer if that doesnt work boot from cd again instead of pressing r hit f8 until you get to a screen where it asks you to repair this is past the screen you had b4. you want to repair this should do the job you will loose any updates but you will have your ocmputer back

or you could try a windows check point restore if you hit f8 on boot you could have the option to go to safe mode or last good config try last good config or safe mode if you get into safe mode should be able to do a system restore from there but my first suggestion will defintly work this one will be less effort if it does work

oh yea when you do the chkdsk /p dont interupt it or you could stuff you computer further. it can take up to five hours but only usually takes about 15mins just let it do its thing its normal for it to jump from say 70% back down to 20% complete or what ever just leave it running

there is however too a small chance that you'd need to reinstall the entire operating system from scratch. a small chance. that's the problem with these complex OS ...

all the best though ... i've had troubles like this before - laptop going to sleep after a few minutes of partitioning, laptop going to sleep due to closing of lids, laptop going to sleep due file transfer ... i mean did no one at MS think about these things and self disable sleep arrrrgh ... sorry to hijack :)

back on track - all the best again!

also next time make sure you create restore points before updating. i set mine to manual updates so i can do this.

mmmm all of these you talk about can be changed in control panel power settings. or was that a joke?

dont forget to push the enter button after each command

eg

fixboot then hit enter button
fixmbr hit enter button
chkdsk /p hit enter button

once done type exit or restart then hit enter and it will restart the computer not sure if its exit or rrestart try em both

1st thing to do would be to boot up in safemode and do a system restore. when a windows update starts a install it creates a windows system restore point of the system before the update was applied. you can then in theroy get your system back to the state it was in before the update.

but as some one pointed it this may not work all the time but its generally good. ive used that method to get a machine working that was 1/2 way through a service pack install and there was a powercut

Thanks for all the help.

Windows won't start in safe mode or with the last good configuration. So I will do a repair on monday when i have the windows disk and see how that pans out.
