Just want to share with you guys impression on Windows 7 Beta Build 7000

Hardware:   HP Pavilion Slimline
                 Intel Core2Duo 2GB Ram 500GB hdd
                 nvidia GeForce8400 GS
                 Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1200 (model 71xxx, hybrid DVB-T)

Starting OS was Windows Vista Home Basic then updated to Vista Ultimate. Windows Media Center good with analog antenna though split with regular TV.

Updated to Vista Ultimate and found this OS really good. Was beginning to really like Ultimate because I was really testing VM (ms virtual machine) to run Windows XP so that a lot of my software would run under XP due tolots of hickups if under Vista.

Came across thread here in Geekzone regarding Windows 7 Beta and DVB-T (can't remember, anyway thanks a lot whoever posted!), I was really having problems with vista and windows media center for Freeview. Decided to install from vista ultimate to Windows 7 Beta first week of Feb 2009 and until now I am using its as my primary OS.

Install/upgrade from vista ultimate was a breeze. It automatically updated everything right. But most of all, Windows Media Center was able to connect to Freeview using my WinTV HVR-1200 tv card thru DVB-T and works fine now.

I have started loading all my other applications from XP, so far so good.

The only problem I have is Video is a little bit pixelized whenever I watch videos from youtube and any other from the net. This was not an issue before with Vista. It automatically upgraded itself with the new  NVidia driver when I upgraded. Seems video support still needs some tweaking.

Windows Media Center really good with Freeview little bit slow and pixelized when changing channels. At times no video only sound will be heard with WMC. Clicking to turn on WMC to watch Freeview at times "signal not found or DVB-T tuner conflict or not found" appears. WMC still needs maybe a little bit of tuning.

Just wondering if video acceleration matters here? Anybody can make any suggestion?

Overall impression: Very impressed and will continue using Windows 7 Beta OS. (by the way OS has no expiry).

Unless you've installed a crack (which does have an unintended consequence as well) your OS will expire on the 1st August. EVen with the crack you're bound to be out of luck anyway as Microsoft will jut disable the beta via Windows Update.

Hi sbiddle,

What is the unintended consequence?  I haven't installed the crack myself but I dread the thought of going back to Vista before Windows 7 is available for purchase...

One other question I had was around the expiry date itself.  I've seen screenshots of the About Windows box which states an expiry date.  My copy (downloaded from the MS site with a key they allocated to me) does not mention an expiry date on it at all.  What does this mean?

Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-faq.aspx

Scroll down to Testing The Windows 7 Beta, and click on How Long Can I Use The Beta?  It clearly states it expires on August 1st and that you need to be prepared to revert to a previous version of Windows from that date.

You're using Beta software at your own risk, one of those risks is that the beta will expire before the full release.  Noone knows the release date so there's every liklihood that we'll all have to revert to Vista come August 1st.

Ahh, I have no idea as all this info is at home?  What is special about these keys?

I got my key direct from Microsoft when I signed in and downloaded the beta from the website.  I do not have a dodgy key or dodgy copy of the beta.

Just interested as to why my beta does not show an expiry date.

I got mine direct from MS (as part of the public beta) and I've got one of the key's above, mine isn't showing an expiration date, but does show the build number.  I guess they figure they don't need to put the expiry date on the system since it was made pretty plain in the confirmation emails and documents that came when you got your keys.

Yes I am well aware of the expiry date.  And I'll most likely be one of the idiots who line up at midnight when Windows 7 is released in NZ.  Well actually I'll be one of the first to buy it the next day.

And yes I understand all of the risks etc of using a beta.  I just didn't expect it to be so much better than Vista, and have not been thrown into a conundrum :)

Finally, I'm always interested when people say things like sbiddle did without qualifying them.  sbiddle seems to be very anti Microsoft, so I was interested to see if he had anything to back up his claims.

As far as I am aware those are the only 10 keys issued for the public beta.

I assume MSDN etc issued different keys.

Agree totally gehenna.

Ok, I'll be more clear (again).  Why have I seen screenshots on the internet showing the "About Windows" dialogue box with an expiry date, but mine doesn't?

I'm not asking to be reminded of what the terms and conditions of the beta are.

Man, you mention that you dread the thought of going back to Vista after the beta and everyone jumps on their high horse and automatically assumes that I have or am about to do something dodgy!  Is it a crime that I feel that Windows 7 is far superior to Vista for my Media Center functions?

I asked a simple question which has got far from a simple answer.

Can one of the Ops please close this thread now because it has turned ridiculous...

I'm not reminding you of anything, just stating that mine doesn't show an expiration just like yours doesn't.  If you want to conjecture about things then my first thought is that the MSDN and Public beta's show slightly difrerent things - one of which may be stating the expiration in writing on the about windows screen.

1) Microsoft OS' are the only OS' sbiddle uses

2) There is a significant chance any crack you run will contain a trojan

I guess you are referring to images like

and

You will see they refer to 1st July not 1st August which is when the public beta expires, so they are more than likely from a different release (MSDN etc as gehenna has posted)

Mine (from the public beta) also has no expiry date.

The problem with downloading a crack is that 99% of them all contain trojans.

Regardless of whether you think you have disabled it Microsoft can very easily disable the OS through Windows Update since there are only a limited number of keys.
