Windows XP Home Edition SP3

I am trying to use my Flash Drive and my camera, both considered removable media.  I, however, cannot see either of them in "My Computer" OR in disk management.  They are showing up in device manager, but I cannot access the data stored from there (obviously).

I am looking for some kind of instruction regarding possible resolutions to this issue.  As they're not showing up in Disk Management, I cannot see if they have a drive letter assigned, and therefore, cannot change any drive letters on them.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

Yes, sorry.  The camera is connected via a USB cable, and the memory module is a standard USB port flash drive.

so I take it you've tried changing USB cable, changing ports? tried different cards in the camera?

It's not only the camera, the flash drive isn't working either. I've changed ports on both of them, and they both work on a different computer.

So, no suggestions from anyone? Would hate to think I spent 40 dollars on a flash drive I can't use.

After the obvious (camera powered on, Flash drive working on other computers, cables Ok), here's some things you could try.

With the devices connected, click Start, then right-click My Computer and choose Manage, then from the management console select Disk Management. Do your drives show up at all in the disk management console under Removable Drives, and do they have a drive letter assigned? Sometimes removable drive letters can conflict with network or previously connected drives in which case right-click and change the removable drive letter to something unused.

If the drive isn't showing up in Disk Management, then there is something wrong with either the port / hub, the device or the driver - it seems odd that it's happening on two different devices. Do all other USB devices work ok on this port / hub? Try plugging into a completely different hub (i.e a different port not on the same internal hub as the one it's currently plugged into). If that works, then there's something wrong with the port/hub. Is the device plugged into a Motherboard port or an extension port (e.g. on the front panel)? If an extension port, double-check the wiring from the port to the header on the Motherboard as I have found reversal of the data pins (or physically faulty wiring or socket) can cause some devices to work and others not.

Next I would try this.

1. Unplug both devices

2. Go to a command prompt and type the following:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc

This will start Device manager, showing non-present devices (I have put this in a batch file, as I use it quite often to clear out older non-present devices):

3. In Device Manager click View, then Show Hidden Devices.

4. In each of the following categories, delete any non-present devices (the ones with their icons greyed out). This will cause them to be re-recognised from scratch next time they are plugged in:

- Disk Drives
- Storage Volumes (generic volumes)
- USB Controllers

5. Restart the PC and try plugging the devices in again.

If this doesn't work, and you are convinced that the devices and the ports / hubs are OK, then I would next try a Windows reinstall / repair. And if that doesn't work, a full reinstall.

Tip: before doing a repair or reinstall, image your Windows partition onto an external drive using something like Ghost or Macrium Reflect (free, fast, efficient, excellent) so if the reinstall doesn't fix it you can restore back to how it was before the reinstall. Image the partition again after a clean reinstall for much quicker reinstalls int he future.

Good luck.
