i'm currently using NetMeter to monitor my usage but i'm changing from a fair-usage ISP

to freeola which is unlimited off-peak but capped at peak times so i wanted to know if there is a meter(preferably free) which i can set to only monitor at certain times(peak)?

Write a script that starts the usual suspects (Netmeter etc) at the time you want, then kills it again at selected time :)

http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ is good for measuring data usage on one PC. However it doesn't differentiate between internet traffic and say traffic between two machines on your local network.

The most accurate way to measure usage is at the gateway/proxy/firewall so you don't have to install something on every PC accessing the net, also you can then easily measure WAN/Internet traffic only.

Solutions for that require a high level of tech savvyness eg:
Smoothwall, Monowall, pfsense installed on a old pc acting as a gateway
Custom firmware on a Broadcom chipset router like the Linksys WRT54GL

i've just tried networx but it almost does the required job(it meters data on/off peak times)

...however what i should have mentioned in the original post is that the *FULL* weekend is regarded as off-peak so therefore the times are different at weekends. -networx only allows you to set times that are then applied everyday

any ideas for someone afraid/not willing to code
