A patent troll has convinced a judge in patent troll friendly East Texas that Microsoft Office has "unlawfully infringed" on a patent that describes how programs go about "manipulating a document's content and architecture separately."It is based around an XML related patednt which means that MS cannot sell Word that saves documents in .XML, .DOCX, or .DOCM formats that contain custom XML in the US.

The ruling comes into effect in 60 days time. After that time MS are also prohibited Microsoft from providing
technical support for infringing products sold after the injunction
takes effect, or from "testing, demonstrating, or marketing the ability
of the infringing and future Word products to open an XML file containing custom XML."

The judge also required that MS pay $240 million in damages to the patent trolls, plus court costs and interest.

I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long.

The whole thing shows (yet again) how screwed up the patent system has become. The fact that a judge would ban all sales of Microsoft Word because it can edit an XML document? And that's on top of a $200 million award for infringing on this patent? How can anyone think that's a sane outcome?"

Texans man. They're just like a bull at a gate. Was probably wearing a huge cowboy hat with a steer head on it too

I should have patented the words "Illegal operation"

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

The chairman of the company that sued Microsoft has this to say:

We're not out to get Microsoft

Some say he's a hypocrite. What do you think?
