Can someone help me here?

About a week ago, I purchased a Wireless Router from Belkin for the obvious reasons (2 computers one modem) and everything worked fine, no problems with IP or anything.

A couple days ago I took the router back because there was really no need for it, (one computer has wireless mine doesn't) and unplugged everything properly and plugged the cable from the modem back into my computer. It started up and everything looked fine until I clicked on Firefox.

I went and clicked on status on my ethernet connection and it gave me a 169 IP address which apparently is not good.

I talked to Belkin and Comcast (ISP), Belkin told me to contact Comcast, Comcast told me to contact my computer company because I have a Winsock program.

My computer is a Compaq Presario 700, it has Windows XP probably 2002-2003 edition. (Yes I know)

I called Compaq and got ABSOLUTLEY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, and no answers seeing that even though I purchased a plan and paid top money for the device I would have to pay for a tech.

I've looked up several online topics about how to fix the winsock program, Delete the registry keys, reinstall TCP/IP and the likes. I've reinstalled Windows and System Restored all with no outcome.

Could somebody help before I throw my computer into a wall?

Scott

Sounds like a simple case of you changing your IP settings to accomodate your router and you haven't changed them back.

Do you have a static IP address from your ISP or dynamic? What is your gateway setting in you network settings?

I had it set to where it set one up automatically I believe.

I've tried manually but it sends packets and doesn't receive (stole IP address from other computer) I just don't know what to do.

To be honest with you, I just got my Compaq up and running again after a year of problems with the harddrive. Luckily everything was still pretty much in tact.

I'm about to smash it against a wall.

Edit: It doesn't show a gateway or DNS server. It shows the IP and subnet which the IP is a 169 number and the subnet is 255.255.0.0

HELP!

It does sound like a network (yours) configuration problem and it looks like it's neither a Comcast problem nor a Compaq problem.

When you use a router the router itself will have a public IP address assigned by your ISP, and your network will have a private IP range, visible only for your own computers. It sounds as your computer is still using an IP from this range.

There's nothing that requires deleting registry keys and this should never be done without proper guidance (by doing this probably the problem is out of control now). The only configuration you have to do is opening Start | Control Panel | Network Connections, right-click the LAN connection and changing the appropriate fields in the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" service.

If your computer is connected directly to a cable modem then you have to manually enter the IP address, gateway and DNS as recommended by your ISP. If the ISP dinamically assigns an IP address then make sure everything is in "Automatic".

By the way, all Windows machines use Winsock, so whoever told you about "you have a winsock program" is just clueless, since all Windows PC will have it too...

Also, Windows XP comes in Pro and Home editions. There's no Windows XP 2002 or 2003.

And I think you will want to change your handle "GetRidOfYourCompaq" when you realise this is not a problem with this computer.

Sir.

I'm kind of offended by your reply especially towards the end in which you kind of make me out to sound like an idiot. That being said, the online tech support for Compaq/HP and the people that work at the actual company are clueless about the runnings of their computers. I probably know more (Yes probably not enough to fix the problem I can hear it coming) about my computer than they do. So yes I will continue using this handle because I've had nothing but problems with this computer since buying it. I could always send you the transcripts of the conversations AND how long it took them on the phone to come to the conclusion that even though I've bought a warranty and paid for their product they still want to charge me 45 dollars for tech support.

6 hours on the phone getting no answers is not tech support, Dell doesn't charge for their tech support (the other computer I use is one) and I've never heard of this. In fact I hardly ever see a commercial about HP anymore. That must tell you something.

As far as the IP address goes, I've uninstalled the ethernet, plugged, unplugged, restarted, i've done just about everything as far as it goes. I've had no luck and continue to get an IP address when the "fix" is suppose to be doing one of the above. I've gone to IP config in command prompt, I've reset Winsock I've flushed and renewed and all the same final answer.

NOTHING.

As far as your comment about Windows XP goes, forgive me. I'm just a home user and don't know all that much about the shoddy product that is WINDOWS. On my version it says Windows XP 2002 (or 2003 it's not in front of me) so I assumed that's the XP version I have.

I need some real answers and not some condensending scoff of what the real problem is. Compaq makes a horrible computer, and Windows is the worst OS I've ever dealt with. Bottom line, instead of making it sound like you are insulting me, why not try actually helping?

It might do a world of good.

Don't get offended please. No reason for that.

Have you done the Control Panel | Network Connections configuration I recommended?

I am actually trying to help. Please re-read my post. The OS is not the problem. Believe me, you would have a harder time with Linux on this kind of problems...

I apologize if I came off hostile, I've spent 3 days on the phone and various other situations talking about this problem to people and getting NO answers or the run around. I'm getting tired of hearing it's one thing and then another thing later.

I have indeed tried network configurations, in fact I've set different IP address (the other computer runs on the actual modem so i stole that ip address) I've done everything I can possibly imagine and probably more.

I don't want to deal with Linux, I don't want to deal with any of this anymore. This computer bottom line has given me a horrible time and I'm in the market for an Ibook as of next payday.

Other then that I don't know what to do.
