How do we change what exactly starts up?? When we start the PC it is soooo slow so we need to change what starts etc.

Can you give me step by step instructions please. Thank you so much.

What OS ? XP/98/7/2000 ?

Can try Start, Run, msconfig
That usually gives you a config screen where you can change your startup programs etc

You can also remove, ie uninstall, any software from your computer that you nolonger need or use.

Oh sorry we on Windows XP. We do not exactly what ones to stop can we screen dump them here so someone can advice??

we have removed some software we do not want e.g. Nero but when we do go to the uninstall window it is still there but it will not let us remove it again. Am I making sense??

A screen shot, or list of programs that will not uninstall would be helpful. Same for the list of programs at start-up.

How many icons do you have on the desktop?
How much RAM does your computer have?
How full is your PC's hard drive?
Does your PC appear to run slow at any other time?

Also try ccleaner to flush out garbage files etc - it also has a Startup program manager.

we done a CC clean has not helped. Once the PC has been running it is fine. We were told by the guy who built it that we should have a tune up but we trying to hold off until after Christmas as we want money to stick in a new motherboard and processor.

Based on your desktop screenshot, it looks like you have some folders on there. It is suggested to have as little as possible on your desktop, and if you have to, then have shortcuts only.
I would move the folders you have there to somewhere else, possibly My Documents, and create shortcuts to them from your desktop if you need easy access.

CCleaner or HijackThis should allow you to delete old entries from your windows add remove programs listing.

Have done a CCleaner and HijackThis but when I open add or remove programs nero is still there

With hijackthis, open the misc tools, then open uninstall manager.

From there you can double check the uninstall links, and remove the entry if the file/folder does not exist.
