hello every one ,

my comp had thre partitions in it , i had win XP sp2 installed in C drive ...
i wanted to reinstall win xp so i ran the setup of win XP and while selecting the option , instead of selecting UPGRADE i selected NEW .... so now wehn i switch on my comp it goes to OS choices menu and displays 2 win XP that i can select , i checked later and saw that it had installed the new copy of windows in F : drive ( may be cos it was the only drive with enuf space)

i tried to run setup again and repair it but didnt work out , i tried to format C: ( the older windows )
but it first said that some prgram is using windows and now it says system partion cannot be formatted , i tried to format it from command promt also , but no luck ,
i dont understand why i cannot format c dirve while iam logged into XP which is installed on f : drive

Any idea what is happeninig here , ? iam confused , help will be appreciated ...

thanks in advance

It possibly is using a swap file on c: as well. Also c: is probably the active partition and you should swap to F: being the active partition and boot from there - although I am not sure there's boot information on that.

Wouldn't be easier to backup your data and simply install Windows XP again on c: and using it from there?

If you are booting from the Windows XP CD it should offer the option to install in any partition - just select C: and format the partition before selecting it for install. Of course you will have a backup of your data, right?

To remove the OS select menu do the following:
Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and recovery settings.

In the drop down list selct the first option and the un-check 'Time to display list of operating systems' Then Ok.

You can then manually delete the other Windows installation on F:

Not sure if this will help at all, might be a bit late.....

Perhaps I'm just stating the (too) obvious... can't you just kill all the partitions and start again?
