I log in to a domain and set up a user profile (desktop wallpaper, icons, map drives, etc.) on a computer with Win XP Pro. When I reboot/shutdown the computer and then log in as the user into the domain it loads a default settings and does not remember the settings that I set for that user. But when I only log off and then log back in the settings are remembered. This happens only for the particular user. I also tried it on a different computer and it is the same scenario so it looks like it is not the computer problem. All users are set on Win Server 2003 AD. I don't know if I could srew it up, because I joined the domain with the same computer name (but it didn't give me any warning). Then later I renamed the computer with a different computer name and joined the domain again. I am not sure if this could somehow affect the user profile. Now the computer is on domain with a different computer name, but the problem with not remembering the user profile when log in to the domain still persists. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

is it a local or roaming profile? is the home drive local or on the network?

Hi gehenna,

If I am not mistaken there is no roaming profile on the domain. Every user logs in to the domain with a local profile. The "home" drive (I guess you mean the C: drive where the Windows starts) is on the local computer.

On one of the Windows XP computers, in the event log are there any errors from around the time you're logging off? (I can't remember off the top of my head if they get logged to the Application log or the System log - sorry)

Are the proper permissions set on the user's home directory? (C:\Documents and Settings\<username> )

When connected to a domain, if you wish for the settings to be saved, then you must set it up as a roaming profile. This can be set from the Windows server management console.

Then, if you wish it to be a local proflle, that can then be set by an Administrator on that computer, via the properties of 'My Computer'.

System Properties -> Advanced -> User Profiles -> Settings - will show you the user profiles related to that machine. Worth a look. A screenshot here will help with the diagnosis. A screenshot before/after each stage of your procedure would be good.
