Hi,

Have a small problem with Windows 7 64-bit - the DVD drive isn't working.

Have googled and I see many people have encountered difficulties but their issue seems slightly different - they are able to see their drive in device manager, but I can't see anything that's obviously identifiable as a DVD drive.

When I put a CD in the drive it appears to work as it should - it ejects, I can hear it spinning up and the LED lights up.

However, when I try to burn something I'm told no drive is detected,

Anyone have any ideas on how I might get this sorted?

Cheers,

Blair

Is the BIOS on the machine showing the DVD drive?

Has this drive worked previously on another OS on the same machine ?

Hi,

Thanks for your responses.

The drive shows in the bios and as the first and second boot devices (is that notmal? have been away from windows for a few years), and it hasn't been tested before - this is a new machine PB Tech built for me, which came with Windows 7 installed.

Cheers,

Blair

Interesting, managed to boot a live linux session and that shows a floppy drive but no DVD drive too. Does that wires were plugged into the wrong places?

Could possibly be a faulty drive, or a plug has come loose inside. Hard to say without seeing it.
Do you have another drive to try in it?

Hi,

No, don't have another drive here to test; had it built for my parents, and they don't have any old stuff hanging around.

I may call in a friend of my father's who runs a computer business; I'm not experienced enough with hardware to play with the innards of the computer with confidence.

Although I've installed/replaced components on my own computers I don't want to risk breaking my parents' one (especially given it's only a couple of weeks old).

Thanks everyone for your help,

Blair

Is it connected with an IDE (80 wire) cable - big flat ribbon?
If so there should be jumpers on the drive.
There would be a little jumper pin - check if its set to MASTER/SLAVE/CABLE SELECT and (with the PC switched off) change the jumper around and restart and see if anything happens....

The lens are the problem. Either they are dirty or damaged. Clean it and see if it works. Otherwise replace it. You should check if it works on another Win7 PC. If it does then d cables or the drivers are faulty.

If it is a "new" machine as you say why don't you take it back to PB Tech for repair under warranty/CGA?

Got a guy to come round, and a lead inside the computer had come loose. He was surprised - said it took a fair bit of effort to pull the lead out if it was put in properly, and felt the issue should have been detected before the computer was sent out..
Returning it to PB Tech to be fixed wasn't really an option because I bought it from the Dunedin store and the computer was in Timaru - would have involved too much hassle and time without the internet and email (was the only PC at my parents place).

Thanks,

Blair

good to see you know what the problem is now.

I am currently have an issue which at first i thought was the same, but my Brand new win 7 machine can use its dvd player and burner but when i try and use the built in win 7 dvd maker it says no device detected.

Any ideas

Thanks. Tully
