I have a Lenovo T60 laptop that has just started doing some weird things. About a week ago, when using the trackpoint, the cursor would fly round the screen uncontrollably and opening and closing drop down lists. The only way to rectify this was restart the laptop

I then turned the touchpoint off to only use the touchpad which seemed to work. Then both stopped working so i plugged in a mouse and it seems to be going ok.

I rolled back the touchpad drivers and it seems to be stable again

I have scanned for viruses and found nothing so hope that my motherboard isnt packing it in...even though my wife thinks its time for her to get an iPad.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I usually ignore Windows Update supplied driver updates for laptops. In the laptop world a hardware identification string can be identical for many similar but not exactly the same types of hardware. Often leads to weird problems. Use the drivers from the laptop manufacturer site for that specific model.

Other than that, a good clean of the touchpad might be worthwhile.

Thanks for your reply. I will turn of updates. I have rolled back the driver but to not effect. Will also pull the keyboard off and give it a good clean and see how we go.

Depending on your o/s, setting updates to 'critical only' (ie; no drivers) or 'notify only' where you get to choose what to apply might be preferable.

Windows doesn't install driver updates automatically. You can keep Windows Update as it is, just don't install those drivers.

I usually download driver updates from the manufacturer's site. I don't know about the Lenovo laptops, but I just received a Lenovo desktop this week and it comes with a program to check their own server for driver updates. Quite handy.

With Vista if you have "Give me recommended updates the same way I recieve important updates" checked, you will get driver updates.

It is not the default though.

Don't recall other o/s.
