Not totally surprising but...

I don't see statcounter code on Geekzone, Trademe, Stuff or NZ Herald... they claim it's on near 40,000 NZ sites but not any that matter than I can see.

Here is the story... On Trade Me you will see a huge number of Internet Explorer users. Understandable because they are more mainstream. On Geekzone Internet Explorer is still the majority (as of today 32%), followed by Firefox (28.53%) and Chrome (25.27%).

And this is on a site with a large tech audience. You'd have thought the number would show a larger Chrome uptake.

Don't get me wrong. It's growing and next month it will pass Firefox. But I think those Statcounter numbers are wrong. They get a lot of sites, but I don't think they get the ones that matter.

Yeah that's what I mean, pretty much everyone visits Trade Me, Stuff or NZ Herald at least once a week.

Tracking on those sites are likely to have a better idea of what is being used in the general population.

At the end of the day I don't think most consumers really care about what browsers they use. Its just a tool for viewing data.

Sometimes I think that the only time users really need to know about what browser they have is when a plugin fails and they need to go into tech forum to get it solved. Unfortunately for the user, they are often swamped with 'browser x is better than browser y' statements rather than people trying to help them diagnose the issue.

I'm guessing that "Safari" includes a number of non-apple webkit based browsers, including the HP Touchpad and Nokia Symbian OS mobile phones?

What is most striking about those statistics is that only a small and declining minority of a tech audience is willing to use a Linux desktop.
