Hi there, for the last few weeks I have been receiving an error message when I first turn my computer on. It is a simple dialog box (error code 0x80007114) which reads "Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to initialize the store directory. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full." I can still open Outlook Express fine, and I can't think of anything I have done to cause this issue. My computer has plenty of RAM and HDD space (running XP professional). I have done all the usual malware checks, deleting of caches etc and have gotten nowhere. Thanks for your help,
Ash.

Do you have any backup program that runs continuously?

Hi, thanks for your reply. In terms of background programs, all I am aware of is Trend antivirus, as well as the usual windows processes. I have not installed anything new for a long time, so the fact that this problem only just started happening seems quite odd. I have already tried the steps listed on the page, to no success. Thanks again.

Late last year I started having similar inexplicable and unfixable problems with Outlook Express.  It would go fine for several days, and then crash without warning.  Not at startup as you are experiencing, but sometimes when opening messages with a large number of attachments, at other times when sending etc.  There was no rhyme or reason to it, and I couldn't find anything on MS KB that helped at all.

After using OE since about 1998, I realised that the time had come to ditch it, as MS were no longer fixing any bugs since Windows XP had entered the "extended support" phase.

I downloaded Thunderbird, and it imported all 14 years worth of email messages, my contacts and account settings without a hitch.  Everything just worked, and now I don't know why I waited so long!

Ok thanks for that. If nobody else has any solutions then I might have to switch to Thunderbird or similar.
