Hi there.
I brought a second hand Dell Dimension 3000 for my parents to use just for email. Anyway we did a complete fresh install of Windows XP SP3. Problem we have now is that when we go to Start > Shutdown. The computer does its shutdown process and everything turns off. Then 5 seconds it powers up again by itself. Not sure what the problem is. Have tried numerous google searches and fixes but no luck. The only thing that has worked is holding the power button in on the front of the tower for a few seconds and it now stays turned off.

Jammed power button? Can you unplug the power button internally to test it?

Check that the BIOS doesn't have the "restart after AC power loss" option turned on. (If it even has such an option).

And, reset bios could not hurt either.

Go to the Dell download page for that model and install the chipset driver package.

Drop a link to the download page if you are not sure which one that is.

Could be acpi driver related.

Also, check for any wake-on events in the BIOS (Like Wake on Lan, Wake on Modem).
Some also have Wake on USB.
