Basically a couple months ago, i tried to install ubuntu server 12.0.4 on my desktop and it literally killed me hard drive. i still have it, but it wont spin up, no sounds come from it at all. SO, today i tried it again, and well, same thing happened, but this hdd still spins up. HOWEVER, it is not usable but it spins up.
Let's just put it this way, there are literally millions of Ubuntu machines out there without dead hard drives.
So I put to you the following.
1. You have incredibly bad luck 2. those hard drives were about to die anyway and the act of installing an O/S (which is fairly disk intensive) pushed them over the edge
And in the second case "it spins up but is not usable" - what exactly do you mean by not usable?
We are still curious about what went on here. More details would have been useful. Did either hard drive get taken to another professional for some analysis? Was the problem occurring on one particular motherboard, one SATA cable, one PC power supply etc. or were hardware variations tried?
