Hi to all geekzoners

as i'm new to geekzone and forums in general please be patient and let me know if I break any rules or codes etc.

I am tring to get online with my ubuntu 6.10 instalation, I have a paradise cable modem connection which works well on windows with all the IP's defualt gateways DNS etc from telstra. I can even ping my winXP server and this PC through the network, and even the cable modem itself. However I can not get online with ubuntu, even with a direct cable connection. I have searched high and low online for any tips or magic cures, but alas most hits in google lead to links which link to others links leading to nothing more than a lot of wasted time and very sore eyes.

If anyone using the paradise cable network can give me some hints, tips, or (touch wood) a solution, it would be good to get rid of this headache regards drh28

Very interesting problem. I don't know jack about cable modems but if its anything along the lines of a NAT box like how you have with ADSL connections then you should be online.

What bothers me is how you can ping the cable modem and ping your other computers in Ubuntu. That means that your network config is working correctly.

As far as being on ADSL is concerned, your default-gateway should be the router box (cable modem for you). I'm probably not the right person to help but anything to get another Ubuntu box out there.

The cable modem is not a NAT device. It's a dumb device and the IP configuration is on the point of entrance to your network - either your PC or your router.

IP address, DNS and gateway must be configured as passed on from by TelstraClear. This information must be entered on your PC or your router, whichever is connected directly to the cable modem.

You might call TelstrClear to confirm you have the correct information for connection.

Sounds like your network interface is working fine. However, Telstra cable modems generally use static IPs.

By default, Ubuntu will be configured with DHCP which means it'll pick up an IP address automagically from your server. Now, to get Ubuntu to play nicely with Telstra systems, you'll have to configure your interface with the static IP address, DNS & gateway info issued to you by Telstra (you can find these details by looking at your Windows server*).

Now, here's the catch. If you configure Ubuntu with the same static IP as your Windows server, it will conflict. Only solutions here AFAIK are to a) install a dedicated router that uses NAT/DHCP to share the connection (preferred), b) get an additional IP address from Telstra or c) configure Ubuntu to make your windows server the default gateway (cheapest).

Before you jump to conclusions though**, try configuring Ubuntu with the correct static IP info & connect it directly to the cable modem (while the Windows machine is turned off). * To discover your static IP LAN details on a Windows machine, go to Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties. If 'use the following IP address' is selected - you're using a static IP. Alternatively, type 'ipconfig /all' into the command shell. It should report the DHCP status & other relevant connectivity info.

** I'm assuming you're 'sharing your connection' on a Windows box. If you're already using a dedicated Router with NAT, then this probably isn't the problem.

Sorry I'm not sure what AFAIK means if anything,
the direct cable connection made no difference

An overview of the network me and my flatmate have goes something like this;

telstra cable goes to cable modem,

ethernet cable from modem goes to 1st network card on winxp server,
2nd network card on server goes to switch,
up to 7 other pc's can be plugged into switch, and have been when we have gaming Lan nights and a few mates bring their pc's round to play soldiers,
both mine, flatmates and quest pc's get internet access by setting the default gateways on our pc's to the IP of the 2nd network card on the winxp server, if someone brought a windows pc round for me to look at or upgrade, it would be online in a matter of minutes,
the connection between the two nic's in the server are not bridged, and as far as I know don't need to be, afterall I'm online now

yet this ubuntu is being give me headaches, but when it finialy works there will be a good sigh of satifaction.

I was thinking there may be some protocols I need to install or remove from ubuntu?, but I'm also wondering;
about host names,
the way ubuntu has given 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1 IP's to certain aspects that system,
if IPv4 or IPv6 settings has anything to do with it,
windows firewall, but this would not affect direct connection,
should 2nd network card on server have a default gateway set to the IP of the 1st nic on server for ubuntu to connect, even though other windows pc's can still get online

If your current configuration works for your computer and other computers, than it's something on the Ubuntu installation - so don't change anything on the working computers...

Surely you can just configure Ubuntu to have a static IP address and point its gateway to your Win XP machine with the two NICs?

What happens when you do a traceroute from your Ubuntu machine to say www.telstraclear.co.nz ?

I wish it was that easy,
traceroute on www.telstraclear.co.nz
replied with something along the lines of
could not find 'www.telstraclear.co.nz' and please enter a valid network address

my bandwith just ticked over to a new month so I might download a different linux gui OS and install it on another hardrive on the same system. see if I have any more luck with something other than ubuntu 6.10, any more ideas on the ubuntu issue will still be useful, as i'm not going to give up on it completly just yet, after all if everything was easy we would learn nothing.

Ok, before we go further, best thing first to do is understand your setup - I assume that it is setup as the following:

Internet ---> Cable Modem ---> Windows XP Server ---> Ubuntu Client

So the Windows XP Server acts as an intermediary between the internet and Ubuntu client.

If that is the case, I would be making sure that firstly, can you load websites using the ip address? if u'so then its a DNS configuration issues, which then you'll need to check the DNS configuration in your Windows XP configuration and Ubuntu; change the Ubuntu DNS settings to match that of your ISP's/Windows XP uses and see what happens.

Yes thats right because ultimately your Ubuntu should behave just like Windows on the network as far as getting an IP address and DHCP etc.
And as long as the drivers etc work, basically any other Linux you try will probably yield the same results as Ubuntu.

Just to further add what kaiwai said - maybe you could scribble a drawing for us to show the layout? With IP's etc.

Hi drh28!

I'm have some kind of problems conecting me to the internet with Ubunto, howerver, all is fine now, so, let me tell you somethings about the Ubuntu world.

You have to configure (or at least I had to) your network manually, with: ifconfig on console, but after that you have to know some specific stuff about the networking drivers on the /proc/dev/net file:

# cat /proc/net/dev


Inter-| Receive | Transmit


face |packets errs drop fifo frame|packets errs drop fifo colls carrier


lo: 39 0 0 0 0 39 0 0 0 0 0


eth0: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 


Those are the network interfaces detected in your system. Now, knowing that you can use the ipconfig to do something like this:

# ifconfig eth0 172.16.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 172.16.1.255

Hmm....

Ironically I have landed in the same boat. Using ubuntu 6.10.

The amazing thing is....this Ubuntu is all correct. Even specified manually. All settings are correct. I can ping and even connect to other computers over the LAN just not the internet. Very very strange. I may have to look into that ifconfig shizz myself. Chur.

Hi abena

As I've said I'm new to Linux, although I've done a bit of command line DOS work in preparing Windows installations, I'm no expert.

Is ifconfig a file I need to edit, or as I suspect, is it a command I need to run, and if so run where and how?

Ok, if your are working on Gnome, just go to: Places-> Console and there, on the comand line do: ifconfig, and there put all the information, also, you can do: man ifconfig, for a guide to the instruction!

Cheers to everyone who has read or responded to my plea for help,

My transformation to the light moves one step ahead,

I am now online with mozilla firefox on ubuntu 7.04 as I type,

This version of ubuntu was online as quickly as I would of expected to get online with XP,
seems that my install iso or cd for ubuntu 6.10 has some files missing or perhaps there are addin's I was missing.
Either way I have a version that works online, now I just need to learn how to use it.
