Has anyone tried installing linux on one of these cheap laptops or hybrids available from the Warehouse and some other appliance stores.

I could find little technical reference to them on the internet.

According to the windows 10 set up system id the manufacturer is twg(the one I looked at was product code e2004, though the one I am interested in is a 8.9 inch hybrid for $179).

I know on some of these budget systems the bios locks out any attempt to install alternative os installation .. I have not been able to inspect or find any reference to bios specs for these devices.

The ram is 2 G in the one I am interested in which is limiting ... though I had vague plans of opening it and replacing the ram chip if I can garner enough information on the hardware.

If you are able to burn a Linux iso to a flash drive it would be possible to test it out & see if you can get it to boot, or if maybe use an external usb cd rom & use a dvd to test it? Burning a dvd linux iso in Windows is really easy.

If it will work I'd suggest something like Xubuntu 16.04 LTS or Lubuntu. Maybe Linux Lite 3.6. All three of these are light weight distros. At the moment Xubuntu 16.04 LTS has about 485 mb of updates to download - a heck of a lot less than the soon to come creators update in W10 I'd bet.

For exploring hardware compatability with linux I recomend rescuecd.

It has a broad range of hardware compatability so will probably play nice with your computer when other Linux distributions turn up their toes.

The site has easy to fillow documentation on how to create a bootable rescuecd usb drive. This Linux version is set up for low level diagnostic and repair and is not suitable as a normal operating system.
