Hi,

I am running Linux Mint 18.3 which I am wanting to utilize as a router using this tutorial here.

I have my cable running from the fibre box to the computer but have no internet connectivity. I am not using the router supplied by Spark as using a router to make a router defeats the purpose.

I am trying to configure network manager (sudo nm-connection-editor) to get connectivity but am unsure of some of the settings.

I have selected "manual" as the method and have input the static IP address I am leasing from Spark in the Address box but am unsure what my Netmask and Gateway settings should be.

So my question is is it possible for Linux Mint to connect to the internet this way, if so how?

Thank you for your help.

Edit - link didn't work, tutorial is here:

You need to terminate PPPoE, Do not use static ip. we allocate that to you statically.

Also remember to include the vlan tagging.

  • Operating Mode : MDI/MDIX
  • PPP Protocol : PPPoE
  • PPP Username: user@spark.co.nz
  • PPP Password: password
  • PPP Auth Type : PAP
  • PPP Mode : Always on (Dial on Demand disabled)
  • Encapsulation : 802.1Q
  • PCP Marking : 0
  • VID (or VLAN) : 10
  • MTU : 1,500 or AUTO

Are you sure you need to configure the IP manually, or does your ISP push this out with PPPoE?

Please be careful when doing this as your box will be configured directly to the internet. In-fact, this is not at all recommended if you're asking on here.

You're honestly best to use a router.

I have discovered an app for this in case anyone is interested.

sudo apt install pppoeconf

I found out about it here:

You may be able to create your own router by using VyOS as a Virtual Machine.

If anyone has had any experience using VyOS I would be interested to know how it worked for you.

VyOS is what the Ubiquiti Edgerouter uses. I would strongly recommend perhaps picking up one of those as it is an actual router.
