I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop this afternoon. Then I installed VLCmedia player using this command:

sudo apt-get install vlc

However I can't play .vob files or DVD movies. I was previously sing Ubuntu 8.04 with earlier version of VLC and didn't have any issues. I'm belive this is issue with VLC not Ubunntu. Is there anyway to try eariler version of VLC? or anyone else having similar problems?

Did you try apt-get installing:
libdvdcss2, w32codecs, gstreamer, libxvidcore4 etc.. ?

I really regretted doing the upgrade to 8.10 on my home computer instead of say the htpc or a virtual machine and doing some thorough testing.

VLC would crap out and die, when trying to tell it to output to tv display :0.1 worked perfectly fine with hardy.  Compiling from source made no difference although I didnt try a different source version.

The issue I hated the most was the vpn manager changes (no option to disable use default route for example with pptp).

It's amazing how the "small" issues can drive you up the wall. I had a backup of all the apt packages I had for hardy so it was a 5minute job really to get fully up and running on hardy once I remembered to install on dmraid.
