Hey all

I really want to swap over to linux and unfortunitly still in the dark ages and on dial up

but am haveing great trouble trying to configure my motorola 56sm modem to register on the OS, i have looked at other forums but havnt found a straght answer, im resonably savvy with computers but am new to linux and need help

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is a PCI WinModem yes?

If so you'll have little chance of getting it working in Linux. If you can't switch to broadband I suggest you try an external modem. Maybe this will work. Maybe not.

You could try here for some info.

I've been looking around the net and I didnt think that it was a win modem from the infomation i found but i maybe wrong.

If it si a Motorola sm 56 that is a softmodem - aka winmodem - which will probably not work on linux.

the problem you now have is you need to find out how it is supported in linux - although almost certainly through the linmodem driver and then exactly what linux distros it will work with.

Even once you have that there is usually a lot of loops you have to jump through to get the linmodem driver to work.

as an alternative to your Motorola (which is a soft (win)modem and you'll struggle to get that supported on any current kernel) you might look at USR's 5637 - it's a controller-based USB modem that seems to be Linux-friendly
