I'm brand new to the linux OS's and just installed CentOS 5.5 on my desktop. I'm trying to use YUM software updater but its not working. It keeps giving me an error for connecting to mirrors.I am an absolute newbie to this system and have no idea what I am doing. I am trying to install my linksys wireless network adapter, but before I can do that I need to run the updater to get software that is missing from my OS. Any help would be appreciated.

This is the code error that keeps coming up:

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
 * base: mirrors.gigenet.com
 * c5-media:
 * updates: mirrors.gigenet.com
file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again

I can't find any simple directions on how to do anything for CentOS 5.5 on the internet at all-the handbook didn't help either.

Hi,

Your yum is set to use a local file repository.

You can disable this by editing /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Media.repo and modify it to enabled=0

if you are doing this from the command line you will need to su - to root, if you are using the GUI you may be assked for the root password.
If you arent and it either wont open or opens in read only you will need to edit it on the command line. Some thing like this:

su -
vi /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Media.repo

Modify it to enabled=0

Save the file and re-run your yum update.

Hope this helps

Paul
