Hi all,

Im new to both geekzone and Linux so bare with me if you can,

I have a laptop with Debian installed however it is just the base file no desktop client etc.

I wanted to install one so tried apt-get install gnome but that wouldnt work, I then tried apt-cache search gnome and it brought up nothing. I have tried the same with a few different desktop options but im getting nowhere.

Am i completely missing the gist of things??

I dont even care what desktop i have at this stage.

Cheers.

Which release of debian?
If uncertain...

# cat /etc/debian_version

You would need to run 'apt-get update' before ''apt-get install' or 'apt-get upgrade'.
Does 'apt-get update' work o.k.?

I would have though 'apt-get install gnome' should work.
Perhaps 'apt-get install gnome-desktop'

Were there any error messages?
You are doing this as root (or sudo) aren't you?

If you're new to Linux, perhaps try Ubuntu (which admittedly is based on Debian)....

I had a quick look on my Ubuntu server, I would guess its: sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

Might have to.

Tried apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment as root but same thing, Unable to locate package.

How are you getting on with your Debian squeeze (6.0) installation?
I've just done an install here and pretty soon I wanted a newer iceweasel (firefox) and newer gnash (GNU shockwave flash player).

So I added the repositories for backports and mozilla updates.
Details here:
http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/
http://mozilla.debian.net/

First (as root) create a file:  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/backports.list

# Debian Backports and Debian Mozilla packages.
# http://mozilla.debian.net/

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-release

Then install the archive key from http://mozilla.debian.net/
E.g. as root:

# wget http://mozilla.debian.net/pkg-mozilla-archive-keyring_1.0_all.deb
# dpkg -i pkg-mozilla-archive-keyring_1.0_all.deb

Then to install the latest iceweasel (e.g. firefox 11.0).

# apt-get update
# apt-get -t squeeze-backports install iceweasel

To update GNU flash...

# apt-get update
# apt-get -t squeeze-backports install browser-plugin-gnash

Now I'm running iceweasel/firefox 11.0 and the performance of GNU flash seems better on Youtube videos too.
