we have just purchased a new i-mac and i am use to a window based laptop. the old laptop that i had used had vlc player installed on it and some vlc files as well. currently our macbrook pro laptop will not play these files or videos. Does anyone recommend a imac file convertor we should use or should be use the vlc i-mac free version ?

Indeed, VLC for mac is great and should play just about any file.

If you do want a good video format converter try handbrake. I tend to have everything in my itunes library so covert to MP4 using handbrake.

Also, if you want another player could try installing Divix.

If you are opening mp4 or m4v files (and a few others), Quicktime should do the trick. But I would also +1 VLC

Installing Perian should give you some other options as well.

The only issue I have with Handbrake is the slow release cycles. I now use ripit and then turbo.264hd (with dongle) with Handbrake as a back up option.

Perian is no longer being developed or supported, so as current video formats evolve and new ones come along, Perian will be less and less useful over time.

VLC is the way to go.

I use mplayerx - clean and more OS X like in terms of behaviour.
