Hello Everyone, (not sure if this is best place for this)
I have recently purchased a new mac and am really enjoying it.
I have an (marginally old) JVC Mini DV camera that i have been recording to tape on. It has a "DV out" port on it that i plugged a firewire cable into and then plugged it into my MACs firewire 800 port...
Under sys profile(next to firewire) it doesn't even pick up the camera... I have powered it up, pushed play nothing... Do i need some sort of driver perhaps (which i can't seem to find on the net??) - any thoughts / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It might depend on your version of mac OSX. The latest version 10.6 Snow Leopard left out a bunch of firewire drivers when it was released. The newest macs come with this OS installed. It is rumoured that the next update 10.6.3 might reinstate some of the firewire functionality, and you can freely download this when it is released. I use !0.5 leopard so havn't experienced this personally, and it has delayed my wish to upgrade until I know my older devices will be supported. You could check the finder menu (top left) about this mac and it will say what revision of OSX is intalled on your mac.
You might try that but I'd put my money on the OS inadequacy in the meantime. This firewire grumble has been around since Snow Leopard was released about October 2009. Will be fixed if past experience is relevant.
I was perhaps going to look at another option for any further vid camera experts out there....
I notice it has an "AV out" and it came with a cable that plugs into it and splits into 3 rca's + composite, i was was thinking of perhasp seeing if a AV to USB adaptor exists/may work???
If you were to try that you would need a video capture box (miglia, eyetv etc), my advice would be wait for the (firewire) update (10.6.3), it is likely due in Feb from what I have heard.
The picture from the FW would be better as well due to signal loss in conversion,
eg. digital dv -> analogue cable -> digital dv
So really best to just wait, or get a cheap boxed version of leopard off trademe, you can install a bootable version on an external drive (usb) and run that with the FW.
